Whenever I see panels I think cheaper house running costs....
Because here in Northern Ireland it is causing problems with Mortgage Companies when you install these so called "free" systems. There are some minor differences in the law here in N.I. that mean you are entering into a "Business" contract with a company on a residential premises..... Mortgage companies are not happy to get involved when it comes to selling or re-mortgaging a house with these "rented roof" schemes.... in fact they are steering clear of them altogether from what I've heard.... leaves the house owner in a pickle !!
I'm not against them... I just believe people should be aware of ALL the facts before committing0 -

I never even thought of this. If A buys a house using a mortgage and then takes out one of these schemes - are they allowed to sell of the house within ten years considering the roof has effectively been rented out?0 -

As I posted recently on a similar thread from a few weeks back based on a Radio Ulster program On Your Behalf?Well it seems there are issues with the "Free Solar" here in Northern Ireland.. Worth Listening to on the I-Player if you have a chance. If' I've understood this right..... Essentially, by installing these "Free" systems you are "renting" your roof to a business and thus entering into a business agreement for potentially a LONG time (20 years is the norm apparently) Apparently in NI the banks/mortgage companies are having issues with this as there are bylaws in England that allow the resident the right to buy out of the agreement. Here there are not, so it's really up to the company you signed up to and they can essentially charge what they want within reason...... It isn't just one bank doing this either, it's most of them..... They interviewed one woman who was told by the bank valuer that they'd have to be removed otherwise he couldn't value the house. the woman had to pay £7000 or so to buy the system so she could take it off the garage roof so she could sell her house.......
SO be warned, as I've said before... NOTHING IN LIFE IS FREE !!!0 -

Must be a real pretty garage if somebody would take the panels off rather than generating some free electricity.0 -
If she had bought the system outright she would have been crazy to remove them. If they were owned by the property owner they should increase the value of the property, not decrease it.

She did have to buy it outright !!!.. It was the bank insisting on them being removed.... remember it's not just the "Solar" company you have a contract with it's complicated further by the feed in contract...... All I'm saying is it's more complicated than it sounds / should be over here in Northern Ireland....0 -
If a company has rented a roof space, is the owner allowed to sell on the property during this time?0

I know, I read what you said. I'm just saying that if she bought them outright then the worries for the mortgage company should have been alleviated because there was no 3rd party contract. As such, she would be crazy to remove them (unless she wanted to take them to her new property).
I've known people to remove them due to them being an eyesore or because the value of the house was impacted when it was put on the market.0
