Thanks GRM, have tried first link but got this:

    This webpage is not available

    Reload Hide details
The server at mail.google.com.mail can't be found, because the DNS lookup failed.

Did you type the link or click the link because that error message says it is trying to access mail.google.com.mail which is invalid, it should be trying mail.google.com

Gmail doesn't delete emails unless you force it to, so take a deep breath. The connection message only make sense if you're using a client as opposed to the web application, so use that - log into gmail online and it should be findable with a search. Unless you've been actually deleting emails, it'll be there, just maybe obscured from view.

On left hand side, under his name, it briefly says in a red box 'Can't connect to server' which suggests that Gmail has gone wrong and in the process deleted all the emails. That box then disappears which made me think it was just being slow connecting to the server.

Again...this is a perfectly normal error in the web application.

Seriously, go to gmail.com...look on the left, in the hangouts window, below your name. 9/10 times you'll see a little red box flash up with "can't connect to server" in it. Normally flashes up for a fraction of a second then goes, but can appear for longer if you're on a slow connection or it's struggling...to connect to the server.
