GMail - deleted emails - big problem

Options
My husband is trying to sort out a problem he has regarding holiday pay from his work. The situation is slightly complicated and we need to get the last payslip which his old company emailed to him when he was tupe'd over to the company he now works for.

That last payslip wasn't downloaded for some reason but has remained in his gmail account. We've gone to check his gmail account and have the following emails still safe:

Primary, can only see emails sent since 11th September 2014.
Social, can only see emails sent since 1st September 2014.
Promotions, can only see emails sent since 1st September 2014.

We've had no notification that emails from before September would be deleted, if we had, I'd have made sure any needed were downloaded and kept.

On left hand side, under his name, it briefly says in a red box 'Can't connect to server' which suggests that Gmail has gone wrong and in the process deleted all the emails. That box then disappears which made me think it was just being slow connecting to the server.

The amount of money concerned is £50-£150 so not huge but if we can get it will help us pay a couple of bills.

Tech details incase they're significant:
O/S Vista Home Edition
Browser Google Chrome set to update automatically.
Any other details needed I can try to get.

Thanks to anyone who has any idea how we can get emails from before September back IF they haven't been deleted in whatever Gmail has done. My main complaint is that Gmail haven't given any warning before deleting emails.

That should display all emails with the word payslip. If that doesn't help then https://mail.google.com/mail/#all should show all emails sent and received.

I don't think that implies that the emails have been deleted. Try again later.

Thanks GRM, have tried first link but got this:

    This webpage is not available

The server at mail.google.com.mail can't be found, because the DNS lookup failed. DNS is the network service that translates a website's name to its Internet address. This error is most often caused by having no connection to the Internet or a misconfigured network. It can also be caused by an unresponsive DNS server or a firewall preventing Google Chrome from accessing the network.
    Error code: DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN

I have internet connection otherwise I wouldn't be able to post on this forum.
Avast free anti virus doesn't or never has blocked gmail. If it was Avast then it would warn me and I'd be able to sort it.

Looks like Gmail has gone wrong & deleted all the emails.

Stompa: Seems strange to me that I can view emails since September even if there's a problem witht he server but no previous ones. I'd have thought that server problem would mean none of the emails would show.

BTW, my husband has said I can access his email account to get the payslip.

You *have* checked that you're viewing all emails, right...top right hand corner there will be arrows to go back/forward in time...and probably words like "1-50 of..."

GMail won't have deleted your emails.

Are you accessing your emails through a web-browser or a email-client (like Thunderbird or Outlook)? From the error message in your initial post it looks like a client.
I'd try the web-page and see what that gives you.
I've never known Gmail delete any of my emails and I've got them going back to 2003(ish).
I'd also try resetting the settings for Gmail (assuming you are using an email client).

Another question (assuming you're using a client), have you set it up for POP3 or IMAP?

I'd guess not...you normally see that error in the hangouts (chat) window on the left if you're struggling to connect to the gmail server...

Possibly, I was just asking as they can see some emails and not others.

I you look on the LH side there are various folder options, if you click on more then you will see All, this is All emails and you should be able to find it in there.
