I buy bags of cubes of frozen ginger and garlic (separately or together) from the frozen world food section. Cheaper than fresh, nothing in them except garlic and ginger, and no waste.

I reckon to cook from scratch, but if I'm being brutally honest, I also use some convenience foods -
tinned tomatoes, tinned tuna, baked beans, frozen puff pastry, frozen chips, frozen peas, tinned custard, frozen pizzas.
Not all the time - but it's handy to have them in for the days when I don't have time.
I also like to have a bag of ice cubes in the freezer. No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0 -
Some good ideas on here thanks everyone. I was brought up to believe that 'tins' were evil and fresh was always better. I'm just getting around to the idea that some 'convenience' foods are actually more nutritionally sound and more economical, when used as part of a balanced meal.
I'm still fighting the 'guilty feeling' but find that things like tinned custard, rice and soup are cheaper to buy than prepare, portion controlled and a lot less washing up! (i also use the occasional dumpling mix:eek: on top of home-made soup, although I do sneak the packet in with my shopping and would never admit to it;))The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.
Thanks to everyone who contributes to this wonderful forum. I'm very grateful for the guidance and friendliness that I always receive from you.

Fresh Pasta from the shop!
With home made pasta sauce from freezer 9 times out of 10.
Def more expensive then the dried, but so handy and so nice.
I finally found out the reason for the difference between fresh and dried is that fresh contains egg.
I sometimes use ready bought puff pastry but for some reason when I use ready bought shortcrust my bakes go wrong and I end up making my own anyway.
Fav convenience is frozen yorkshire puds. Quick to heat up and as its only me that likes them I can just heat a couple at a time without having leftover batter.Feb 2015 NSD Challenge 8/12JAN NSD 11/16

microwave rice - only trouble with that, is that it rustles the same sound as a pack of 'dreamies' and when I 'ding' it - the cat comes running in the kitchen expecting treats.0

You can put ginger in the freezer unpeeled and grate it with the skin on. Skin stays in the grids! HTH0
