Frozen: peas, spinach and sprouts ( edit and broad beans. ) these veg are the ones which to me are no worse for freezing taste wise , and sometimes better. ( petis pois, button sprouts ) and easier to prep, peas and beans. Some fish. Occasionally icecream. Also in my freezer you'll find Things like puff pastry ...bought fresh and chucked in freezer, I just think often its not worth me making it. And things like crumpets. Things I can make from scratch but are often just easier to buy and have the bonus of being more strictly calorie and nutrient counted ( for things like myfitness pal). And the odd packet of covent garden soup bought on special offer, useful for lazy days. It augments frozen Left overs or home made things.
Tins:some beans, pulses ( use some dried too)
Packets : big treat....lentils, for really lazy eating. There are a few other things, I cannot think of them. Both my husband and the parent who lives with me have draws of 'treats'.
Edit: thought of more things...frozen Chinese pancakes...we have these with chicken more often than duck or fried matchstick aubergine...really nice if its done in a sort of tempura batter. And so we also have hoisin or plum sause in the house usually. Bought lime marmalade and other jams and condiments and sauces, because its often cheaper to buy than make a small batch.
And its certainly easier. Dim sum. When we go to a Chinese supermarket ( rare) we get LOTs of dim sum and then wish we'd bought more. We can make some, I'd love to make more, but frankly I lack sill and grace. My main restriction from buying them is that meat welfare is pretty low or at least untraceable
so its a very rare and guilty purchase.
The more I think the more 'convenience' I have, and I am a pretty though not religiously, cook from scratch home cook.

i am veggie due to meat allergies, if i have people coming round for a meal i will usually cook meat for them - but will use a branded curry or bolagnaise sauce as i am unable to taste while cooking (generally i will bulk it out a bit with lentils and grated carrot - still a bit os) but the veggie version will be made from scratch.Dogs return to eat their vomit, just as fools repeat their foolishness. Surely eggs are the ultimate convenience food and they are natural.
lazy garlic and ginger in a Asian brand are much cheaper than fresh and the ginger keeps longer.
frozen veg always have some in.
Bread, my oven gets to the temperature it likes not what I set it at. Can't change it rented house and built in. Landlord will not fix.
Most of the convenience foods I buy are not full of additives.
Roast potatoes and oven chips my DS will not eat home made.0 -
I forgot to add tines of mushy peas. I remember back in the day when my grandmother used to soak dried peas overninght on Saturday ready for Sunday lunch.0

My Mum used to insist steak was the ultimate convenience food as it was quick to cook and there was no prep time and no waste ...........I still use that excuse to myself when I want to justify buying it

I also keep frozen cubes of ginger in the freezer as they are so much cheaper than fresh and the rest of the root usually gets left to rot as we use it infrequently.
I peel fresh root ginger, leaving it as long uncut pieces, wrap it in cling film and put it in a freezer bag in the freezer. When I need some for a recipe, I just grate it from frozen and return the remainder to the freezer. Never any waste and it grates really easily.0 -
Just thought of another one.
Tinned fish. Don't use huge amounts of tuna or salmon, but we have a tin of smoked oysters ever now and then as a lazy canap! or nibble. And sardines we use in winter about monthly.0 -
Tinned fish here too. Anchovies, sardines and tuna for DD. We so rarely eat meat/fish so there's something loitering in the cupboard for when she gets the urge.
Now, my secret shame...sometimes for lunch I have a tin of mushy peas heated up with chilli flakes!0
