Plusnet Broadband Usage and Home Plugs ?

For two years my broadband usage allowance with Plusnet has been
10 GB per month, During that time my usage has continually been between 3 - 5 GB, as only use broadband for laptop to email, browse, no downloading Skype or games etc.

However, after installing Home Plugs my usage has suddenly increased dramatically i.e. 3GB per day and they have now automatically added more and charging £5 for an extra 5 GB per month, and advise they will continue to add more GB whenever the allowance is used up, therefore at this rate it will cost a fortune.

On the day I used 3GB I watched 3 hours of I player on my TV. Would this account for the increased data which seems huge? On most days I wouldn't be accessing I player at all but the router and plugs are on standby and never switched off as they recommend.

Any comments would be really appreciated.

How much are you paying Plusnet for your 10GB package?

You should be able to get unlimited for less!

It is not the Home Plugs that are using the extra, it is the fact that you are now using more data by using iPlayer etc.

Nobody should be on a capped package and then get charged for going over their pathetic allowance.

Three hours of streaming video through iPlayer will use a lot of data. If you want to use iPlayer, you are on the wrong package - looking at the PlusNet website their up to date packages are all unlimited, and that's probably cheaper than risking going over what is a very low limit. It should be very easy to change to a new package if you get in touch with PlusNet - I've done it several times over the years, and never had any problems.

Currently paying £5.99 per month for 10GB. Will now upgrade to their Unlimited package for £9.99 per month. Appreciate your reply as I didn't realise before that i player used up so much data.

Thanks for your helpful comments. The Unlimited package will be an extra £4 per month so much more economical in the long run. Many thanks again for advice.

And if you haggle a bit you might get unlimited for the same price as you pay right now. I pay £4.99 for unlimited. :money:

I got unlimited for 3.49 per months but had to commit for another 12 months.

I just said I could get Sky for £3.75 and they beat it with no questions asked - worth a go.

In the meantime, you can put a limit on how many times they add the £5 fee in your account section. You broadband will still work, but will be pitifully slow though!

That is quite important. They won't make the change until your next billing date, and you can get clobbered in the meantime.

The thing about PlusNet is that you have to keep an eye on their website. Not long ago I uprated my account from limited-download 3mbs for almost £20 a month to unlimited 14mbs for £17 a month. When were they going to tell me about this better deal? They weren't. Had to find out for myself.

I totally agree with this comment - we've been with PlusNet for about 14 years now (!) and they have never told us when new offers have arrived, you do have to keep checking their website every six months or so to see what the latest deals are.
