I think I'd probably try and carry on doing my job as best as I can whilst looking for another job elsewhere. There isn't any point working somewhere that makes you unhappy and sometimes we just have to cut our losses.

Having said that when the shift manager meets with you again if you don't get satisfactory responses or feel he is trying to bully you then don't hesitate to raise a grievance. If he backed down over a warning regarding your health record and tries to get on with his deputy despite being called a racist by him, it does sound like he does toe the line when his shortcomings are brought to his attention. Even the threat of a grievance against him might make him back off (not now - but if he does or says anything in future that you aren't happy about).

It might be that if you just keep your head down and get on with the job whilst being pleasant to everyone so as to improve the atmosphere in the office, that things do get to near normal again. Perhaps try and be a little extra self-aware at the mo in case you do come across as bragging even though you might not mean to. (People who aren't as clever often think people are bragging because they are insecure and recognise they aren't as intelligent).

Thanks Toots - I am looking for a job but it's taking a while to find the right role with the same pay. I've been keeping my head down and doing a good job. I'm avoiding interrupting other peoples conversations as I think they saw that as being rude whilst trying to make small talk. I feel right now that nothing I do is right!!

Time will tell I guess, but thanks again for reading. All of the responses have helped settle me down and clear my head. I still feel stressed though but hopefully that will ease.

Glad you're feeling a bit better about it all.

Your comment about interrupting others conversations struck a cord with me - there are so many occasions when I've heard people b!tch about others for doing that. I know I often do it and I think it's because I'm frendly. I don't have any problems with others because of it but I've even heard former colleagues who are normally very nice slag off others for doing it. I think it's one of those things that seem to be acceptable to do normally but..... heaven help you if you've upset someone in some way and then do it.

You sound like you've got your head screwed on and it might be that that you can weather this by just doing your job and being pleasant. How can they have a go if you don't do anything for them to b!tch about?

    Good luck!

  • Just wanted to let you know that I did join a union and with the help of my rep I sent an email (copying my rep). I was really stressed and worried about the reaction I would get. My shift lead completely freaked out and I stood firm. The main boss is now aware of how I feel after a very long talk and he is making steps to improve things ensuring people are educated and trained where necessary. I still feel hurt by what's happened and I can't help but blame the individual as he put me through something which no one deserves.

That said, I'm still applying for jobs and have had a few interviews. Whilst I don't have any offers yet my confidence is growing again as I'm getting good feedback from the interviews.

I'm looking forward to a brighter future again and everyone who helped me in this post has had a part to play in how I feel today. It's at times like this when all I can say is "thank you", two small words which mean such a lot.

    THANK YOU
