I was Hacked!

I came home from the shops today, looked on my PC and it was on the front screen to Gmail. Now, i don't use Gmail so this was the first alarm bell. Secondly it was a random email address that had logged in.

Panicking, i had a look at the history for today, as i hadn't been at home to look at my PC so there should have been nothing on it.

Firstly, he'd looked at my profile on a forum i go on. Secondly, he went on my companies website (both of these were in my previous visited websites for the week). Then he'd logged into his unibet account, logged into a couple of different email accounts, and finally he'd gone on western union.

So i cancelled my debit card, credit card, blocked my paypal, nothing has come out of anything in the last 24 hours. I changed a hell of a lot of passwords.

I've just been told that people steal Western Union account details, hack someone elses computer and then use that to do money laundering, leaving me in this case as the registered IP against all the dodgy activity.

What do I do now? If money stealing from accounts has happened on my IP, am i going to get a visit from the Police? Should I contact Western Union to let them know what's happened?

I would contact them, and possibly the police to let them know your concerns and what has happened. :)
  • I'm sure you can find the culprit. Sounds like whoever did it had physical access to your computer - is there anyone you know of who could have used it?
  • There's no way they had physical access to the PC. a) the PC is in the spare room and we were both out the house. b) the keyboard was unplugged as i'd taken it out to use elsewhere. It was just being used as a media server.

I'm convinced they got in via teamviewer - I had it set up so I could remotely access my desktop from my laptop away from home. When i shut team viewer down, it said if i did id kill an open session.
  • It just seems a very strange way to hack a computer. Why start opening browser windows when you could just start copying the relevant files?
  • Exactly - and why was he reading his emails on my PC? I have the internet history, I have the unibet account name and the gmail account name. I just don't know what i should do with them.

So you fitted a front door, didn't bother with any locks and wonder why your computer is being abused?
Understeer is when you hit a wall with the front of your car
Oversteer is when you hit a wall with the back of your car
Horsepower is how fast your car hits the wall
Torque is how far your car sends the wall across the field once you've hit it

I'd start off by contacting gmail and unibet - tell 'em what's happened and that you believe the account is associated with fraud.

No, it's clear to see why my computer was abused - i just don't know what for, and why they checked their own emails on my PC.

I wouldn't be worrying why they did it, I'd be more scared of what they actually did while I was unaware.

Install a VPN and log everything in and out, at least that way you are covered the next time the police trace something back to your machine you didn't know was happening.

I've looked through the internet history whilst it's offline - (there's no way its going back online) and I have a load of information. Should I give it to the Police?

Websites they visited - transferwise, aol mail, gmail, unibet. I can see the account logins for all of these and there's also reference numbers in the links for transferwise.
