Greasy Hair Help

Hello everyone :)

I am a 22 year old girl, and have suddenly had an issue with greasy hair. I had it when I was a teenager, then it calmed down for a few years and now it is back with a vengeance..

I eat a varied diet, and anything from 3-7 portions of fruit and veg a day..I don't really exercise but I walk a lot and definitely not overweight.

It is only my roots that are greasy, my ends are lovely. I don't (and haven't for a long time) used conditioner on the top 1/3 of my hair.

I have tried countless shampoos...different massage methods...but within 24hours of washing my hair, it is greasy again :( I look like I don't wash!

Does anyone have any tips? I don't want to buy expensive shampoos etc but I am going mad here :(

The more I strip grease from my hair the more it makes. The more often I shampoo it the more often it needs it. Try just using a little tiny bit of shampoo and very gently working it through and go a day longer between shampoos. Your hair sounds long enough to tie back or up while it gets used to this.

For many years I grew my hair long, if you think this is unusual in a man then I need to tell you that it is not unusual in the sub culture to which I belong.

Follow this regime for 6 weeks & I promise you that you will have beautiful hair.

    1. Do NOT use any type of soap, shampoo, conditioner or any other type of foreign chemical (dye, hairspray, rejuvenating cream etc) on your hair.

For 6 weeks only this bit is important. Do NOT touch your hair with any chemical concoction other than water.

    2. Brush your hair thoroughly at least twice a day for at least as long as you brush your teeth. 3 mins is not enough, give it at least 5 mins. Make sure you brush it thoroughly & don't pretend to tease it or style it. Treat it like you're rubbing down a horse.

    3. Get your hair wet whenever you shower / bathe but DO NOT use any foreign chemicals on it, especially any form of liquid soap like shower gel or shampoo.

    4. Whenever your hair gets wet, towel dry it moderately. NEVER EVER use a hairdryer, straighteners or tongues. Towel dry it till it's damp then let it dry naturally. Brushing it thoroughly (of course) to rid it of tangles.

Do this for at least 6 weeks & I promise you that you're hair will be as beautiful as it can be for as long as you keep up the regime.

It is all the chemicals & the heat abuse that people subject their hair to that forces the scalp to over produce the natural oils that make the hair on your head appear greasy. 6 weeks is all it takes to restore the natural balance.

During those six weeks, would your hair have been on show? Or covered?

  • Sounds like you need to wash your hair everyday. Get a shampoo thats frequent wash for greasy hair and that should do the trick.
Loads of people have to wash their hair everyday its nothing out of the ordinary.
Greasy hair has nothing to do with diet or being overweight or not as well. Its oil production from the scalp.

    A mixture of both.

My hair was quite short at the time when I learned to stop using liquid soaps, hairsprays, gels etc. I needed to wear a baseball style 'peaked' cap to keep the sun out of my eyes at the time.

When I wore my hair long it was mostly in a pulled back, pony tail style.

But when I wore it loose I was constantly told it was beautiful by the many folk who admired it.

Try it for 6 weeks. 6 weeks is all it takes to realise that all those magazine adverts & articles are nothing more than BS to part you from your money for nothing more than a liquid soap.

Not washing it for 6 weeks might work if you have dark hair. Blond(e) hair would look awful, I would imagine.
  • Many people, myself included have to wash their hair every day. It is not unusual to do this. Mine is fine blonde hair and looks darker when it neeeds washing every morning - a lovely combination of grease and sweat!

I have recently had it cut into a chin length bob and it is so much easier to wash and dry quickly now it's shorter.

Are you confident that my hair isn't blonde?

Don't waste your life being an uninformed sceptic, go out & try for yourself all of those things that you watch others do.

Would you care to share with us your washing regime?
  • I think its obvious what happens when a person washes their hair really. They have said they wash their hair everyday, so what do you think happens? I mean its not rocket science is it.
