Dealing with Car Salesmen

Thanks again.
I shouldn't have said he was pondlife, he was just a very pushy salesman who I started to dislike a lot the more he talked. I was going to go for finance over 5 years so there's their profit margin, no need to keep pushing the useless extras and take the mickey over the value of my own car.
Thank You BJV, another excellent post too.
Sounds like they're using the price to get people in the door and trying to make their profit on all the "add ons".
No way ANY of those should be mandatory. I would have thought the £9995 headline price should have been an On The Road price, not one subject to Road Tax.
Chances are they're trying to make a bit on your trade in when they dispose of it too.
The finance commission on £5000 over 5 years wouldnt cover the profit they need to make though and would amount to a few hundred at most.
I would have done what you did and walked if they couldnt provide the car at the advertised price. In fact i'd probably have asked to see the Sales Manager given how shoddily you were treated.0 -

And they'll chip you back on anything they can.
As i said, its a useful yardstick for a very raw trade price.
Sometimes they're "ok" - if you happen to have a car they want to retail or have a firm trade customer for.0 -

Being honest, I think I'll take it to the main dealer as its two years old and low mileage. They'll sell it used.0 -
I'd agree that webuyanycar is a good guide for the value of selling your car yourself. My husband says he sees the car salesmen cringe when I keep getting more out of them. Don't ever pay the list price you must have a discount on that. If you are happy with the trade-in, once he/she thinks they've got you hooked ask for a full tank of petrol & car mats or whatever extras appeal to you to seal the deal. If they won't then walk away saying you have other dealers to see. There is a better deal out there, especially if you change vehicle makes for something similar. They won't want you walking away, always ask for more than you want, for example say another £1000 trade-in when you would be happy for £500. They usually come back with a counter offer. The latest scam seems to be paint protection. If the paint is so poor then why do you need to pay extra to protect it?
We sold our last car ourselves for more than webuyanycar, so if you can sell it yourself. Once you've got your new car keep on top of any problems, keep a record & if you need to complain. If no satisfaction go straight to the top. Managing Directors/ owners of companies are shielded from problems, so bring it to their attention. When the new Mini first came out we had such problems with the dealership, that we were given a brand new one after 14 months! Good luck0 -

Wifie is thinking of changing her 2 year old car and WBAC offered £12,000 for it. The first main dealer we tried have offered £16,100 for the car, as they'll stock it for resale. Clearly WBAC didnt want the car - its a Z4 BMW roadster.0 -
Its simple don't deal with them. My last new car was bought through the Dutch auction site Autoebid. Fantastic, I saved £3K off what the best dealer offered me for a new Santa Fe.0
