MSE News: Beware split tariff mobile contracts if you're about to apply for credit

Was told recently by someone at Virgin mobile that they are also bringing in split tariffs in the next month or so. Personally I think its a better idea for flexibility and should be little problem from a credit rating POV.
I also found out that as my phone is at the end of contract and I am happy with what I have I could move to a sim only rolling monthly contract-I have never used all the mins and texts on my bundle, so able to save £18 a month. Mind you would never had said if I hadn't have rang to ask about better deals lol.

I find the start of the article a bit odd:
"If you're planning to buy a latest model phone from O2, be aware that you'll actually be taking out a loan for the handset"
Surely if you are buying the phone, then there is no need for any loan, nor any contract, because it's just been bought. Buy the phone, then pay £10 a month or less for a phone service, have no loan, even if bought from O2".0 -
I thought people were thinking the phones were free. Just highlights it that they are notDon't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0

Shuuush, they will start charging Wonga style interest rates soon if we keep discussing this!!
And they would still get 1000s of gullible punters

So what will happen when the contract has ended? Does the monthly amount fall to just the tariff charge if you don't want to upgrade to a new handset?0
