We're changing cars soon, we currently have a Focus Saloon mk1.

Was thinking about going back to a Mondeo mk3 or Vectra C (not exactly new cars I know but more suitable for us and comfortable cars).

I used to have one and don't remember it being very good economy wise (25mpg ish), but this was a number of years ago. So trying to decide whether to scrub it off the list of options or not -- so has anybody got a decent MPG from one? Maybe it was just my driving style at that time.

I'm talking about petrol cars btw - we won't by diesel cars, too much can go wrong (although I do miss a good diesel :().
Our current 13yr old petrol Focus actually achieves between 40-44mpg so we don't want to compromise greatly on economy.
I know having driven somebody elses Vectra C for a time it did well economy wise, hitting about 40/gallon.

Any thoughts?

  • I got about 32 out of a 1.8 Vectra and 24 from a V6 Mondeo.

Yes others will be along saying they got 65 mpg but that's an average and not hanging about.

40-44mpg is actually very good for a what, 1.6 petrol Focus? That must be 90% motorway miles right?

For the age you're looking at the vag 1.9tdi is pretty reliable, still too much to go wrong for you?
Guessing focus is a bit lighter than cars you list, so getting near that mpg may be tough.
At that age I'd take a punt at a diesel, is such a ballache driving like a vicar in a sluggish petrol to try and get a decent mpg.
Maybe a Passat 1.8 turbo petrol?

Its a big car that weighs close to 1.5 tons. If your doing mostly town driving then mid 20's is to be expected.

On a run then 40+ shouldnt be a problem if everything is working as it should.

    Ye, the 1.6 model.

Not motorway mileague as such - just a solid 60mph 20 mile journey with a tiny bit of city driving. Same with the OH who travels 15 miles on similar roads through a few villages before getting to work. So very little stop/start.

My Dad has a Mondeo 2.0 Estate that we've owned for 12 years. It's been reliable but does have poor mpg. 20 around town and 35 on a longer run.

Get a diesel if you don't mind driving them, 2.0 TDCi without DPF is reliable enough and cheaper to run.

Motorway, two people, luggage, full tank, staying at about 75mph, Mondeo 1.8, between 40 to 43mpg. average. Bit more on short journeys of course. That's a Mk3, but really, my old Mk1 2ltr seemed about the same. Well down on power compared to the 2ltr., or should I say torque, for pulling up hills etc. Very noticeable. Its a bigger car, of course, more room, comfort. As with the Mk1, the faster you cruise, the smoother it seems. Hold 90 all day, stable as a rock.

Just try a 130 pd diesel vag engine, best torque/mpg ratio'd car I could find for the money.
You drive torque and you talk horsepower.

I have the 130 TDCI. Bought in 2009 and still going well. They are not all bad if you choose wisely.

    Avoid anything not serviced often.
