  • Either we pay CB or we dont, what someones income is, is irrelevant.
Of course income is relevant, the benefit is suppose to subsidise the cost of raising kids.
Only the poorest should get it.

For those earning over £50k, I'd set it at the benefit cap level of £26k.

We EARN more than the benefit cap, yet the CB I still get for my son goes to help my daughter at Uni, who otherwise would be left with £10 per week to live on & when doing laundry requites a minimum £5 top up on a card £10 goes no where & she doesn't drink.

People think £26,000 is a vast sum of money until you have to pay ALL your own way out of it.

Throwing money at the poor to breed has got us into this mess in the first place.

I've never suggested that £26k is a lot of money, but a cap has to be set somewhere. £50k is too high.

£26k is a vast amount of money, when you work full time and even with wtc and ctc still get thousands less than that.
Birthdays are good for you. Statistics show that the people who have the most live the longest.

Hmm lets see, £50k will be paying more in tax than they may get in CB. Which may well be the only private money one person gets.

The reason Child Benefit started was to make sure (at the time) women had at least some personal income out side the control of their spouse.

No WTC & the ONLY benefit we get is CB. Never got the baby bond, only got very limited pre-school funding. So yes I feel hard done by as we pay for everything and get/have got very little back indeed.

What's that got to do with whether £26k is a vast amount or not?

The difficulty I have with the system is the variety of rents that are charged and corresponding LHA. So a family getting £26,000 in benefits in the SE will be paying far more of that in rent compared to a similar family in the NW.

Just comparing Oxford with Liverpool there is a £450 per month difference for a 3 bed house.

If someone needs private money, then work for it. Or rifle the wallet/purse of the working spouse for a handful of fifties.

CB was introduced when mum stayed at home, or did a bit of part time, it was to give money to mothers incase the old man spent his wages in the Dog and Duck. Times have changed.
There is ample opportunity in the benefits system (as it stands) to subsidise the breeding poor. Not that we should IMHO.
