Buying an Iveco daily LWB van?

I'm looking to buy an LWB (or XLWB) van, have no idea where to ask this so maybe some of you guys have some idea.

I've been looking at a 150,000 mile 2010 Iveco Daily 35S12 XLWB.

I've driven a few fans but never owned one and never driven an Iveco Daily.

I need a large van which is why the Iveco seems perfect.

I'll sometimes be doing 1000 mile distances across Europe in one run so need something which has fuel economy and reliability in mind. Can anyone advise me whether or not this is a reliable van? Doesn't need any of the niceties that let's say the interior of a Fiat Ducato or Mercedes Sprinter have (the latter being out of my budget range I think), just solid and rugged.

  • I don't know much about Iveco vans but their trucks, and more to the point their dealer service, can be woefully bad. I would be very nervous taking one on a long foreign drive.
Are there any LWB hi-roof Transits in your price range?

Normally we'd start using our vans on UK work only at around that mileage.

I think I'd be with runningben on the idea of getting a different marque, Transit or Sprinter. I know you say Sprinter is out of your price range, but you are likely to have less issues with a Sprinter than an Iveco. We run Renault masters and have had some serious mileage out of them - sold one last year at 365,000 original engine and still running sweet as a nut.

Iveco Trucks have improved over recent years I think, but that's probably because they are half DAF now:rotfl:

It's odd that you say this because I've heard some terrible reports on Transits regarding reliability. Likewise the Renaults or anything French, I have driven Renaults myself and this was my least favourite van.

Surprised at the Iveco Daily engine reliability qualms as they are the same engine as the Fiat Ducato. I'm looking at the 2006-2011 Iveco Daily's.

My budget is around 4k, really 5k at a push. All the sprinters at that price are very high mileage.

Also there are plenty of 4.6m xlwb Iveco's about and precious few (so far that I've seen) sprinters with such length.

In fairness, I haven't had a Transit for some years now, but did like them when we ran them.

I think it's horses for courses, we run 8 Masters and had good results out of them, like I said the one with 365,000 really took the biscuit!

It's always a bit of a gamble and you will always get different opinions, you asked and those are mine:D

Of course I found the old transits to be great, but apparently the new ones or the age range I'm looking aren't so good.

I'll have a look at those Renaults, my opinion was based on my doing 700 miles in one, so not a lot really and I have no idea about maintenance/reliability of them.

I buy up to 50 vans a year for my business and the Transits are by far the worst. I recently bought the new Transit custom for myself to use (thinking it must be better than the old model) The engine blew due to a turbo failure after 1000 miles. Not only that but the transit rot like an old nail....as do the mercs. Stick to the french/vauxhall stuff

We run Sprinters as far as the Greek border with Macedonia.

We have no bother with our vans and if we did there are M-Benz dealers everywhere - much better coverage than any other marque.

Ours are long wheelbase but as they are the 2.8 tonne version they have single wheels on the rear axle.

Do you need 3.5 tonne capacity or will you manage with 2.8t ?

If 2.8 is OK then you immediately bring the price of a Sprinter down a good bit.

Check up on the log-book rules - In the UK we tend to forget about these things - the Dutch and the Germans I can assure you do not.

Be very careful too regards the driver's hours. Just because you don't need to use a tachograph doesn't mean that you can run a longer day.

We have even had a German AutobahnPolizei park a van up because he had travelled too far/long in one stretch. They 'punish' you by making you wait till the next morning just to be sure that the driver has rested.

It'll be for private use not business use.

2.8t is fine I won't be carrying anything that heavy, just furniture mainly. So I won't need the dual wheels on the back. What I do need is a lot of space and the 4.6m long Iveco Daily's seem prefect for this as there are many of them in the xlwb configuration.

German police are known !!!!!!, although I'm tempted to extend that praise to the whole nation.

This is the type of thing I have heard a lot, I've also heard mixed reviews about the Sprinters. Haven't heard much about the french stuff, or Fiat (which I've heard good things about), not much on VW or Iveco so far.

Burlington have you ever had experience with Iveco Daily's?

I've had a couple. They are a bit more commercial than the fiats and renaults (fiat don't make the van, peugeot do. They just stick a badge on it) The iveco isn't a bad van overall. Panels can feel a little flimsy too
