I agree it is rubbish.
However consider -
1. Install all the windows updates and get it to Windows 8.1(this gets a 'Start' button back)
2. Then change it so it always boots to the desktop (not the tiles)
3. Pin the programs you use all the time to the taskbar (so you can easily get to them)
4. Customise the start menu (tiles) so you can again see the programs you want
5. If you are still not happy try Classic Shell as suggested0 -
I don't agree it's rubbish, just different.;) As stated above you need to update it to W8.1.1. Then try and learn how it works. If you find that it's not easy for you to use, then as suggested Classic Shell or one of the other third party apps to take you back in time is called for.Drinking Rum before 10am makes you

RumRat you are quite right - it is different - most people just can't see past it.
Getting it to 8.1 is the best thing. Then spending a little time getting it setup right is time well spent.0 -
Stick with it. it takes a while but once you get the hang of it, it is really quite a good OS.Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today!
Cos if you do it today and like it...You can do it again tomorrow..

On the desktop <right click> the taskbar and choose <properties>. In the Navigation tab <Tick> 'Go to desktop instead of Start menu'
Done!
For anti virus I use Microsoft Security Essentials. Others may have their own recommendations!0 -

Install yourself a start menu such as Startisback or Classic Shell etc and it you will probably end up liking it better than Win 7.

I got a new laptop with windows 8, I have been in tears on and off all day today, things I can't do: Scroll up and down, click left and right, put things on a favourites bar and edit them, or get rid of any I don't want. I don't know what Symbaloo is, I don't understand why the 'tiles' are there, getting rid of them is a nightmare as the 'customise' button just comes and goes with a will of its own.
Everything either zooms to 500% or shrinks down to almost nothing every time I touch the touchpad. If I click on the ebay app its too big to see anything and does not take you to your own 'my ebay'.
I go to 'settings' and can't change any of the things I want to change, I can't make Google my home page ... I feel like chucking the thing out of the window.
I used to spend a lot of time on my laptop but now its no fun at all.0 -
