I treated myself to a Rolex about 12 years ago, oyster submariner. It's probably still worth not much less than I paid for it. I did buy it 2nd hand but from a dealer and I've had it assessed/checked out. It's still lost money in real terms as it's not gained in value.

I've now got another quandary, I've got 2 sons and only one expensive watch :) and looking at doing my will in a few weeks.....

Selling the watch isn't really an option as I wanted a Rolex since I was in my early twenties and actually first heard of them.

Sorry, got diverted, I'd seriously consider looking at USA vendors asin my experience the £ to $ pricing seems to hold on designer watches

I think it depends how much you have saved. If this is only your second month of saving, it would seem excessive to me to spend a whole month's savings on a watch. However, if you've been saving that amount every month for the last year or more, it doesn't seem like such a big deal.

Thank you for all your comments everyone - I really do appreciate them. Bowl head that is the site / all I used to source the omega at a lower price. As you said it's unworn, new from a vendor that has 100% approval...

Obviously I would want the paper work for it too.

It's not my second month of savings, but does constitute 8% of my yearly savings excluding my bonus. I don't drink or smoke... Like the most of you I don't waste money on non-essentials generally but maybe this is a one off item that I feel I want.
It's an unusual feeling as I don't get it often... I have a 5 year old car I'm happy with.. Etc.

It's a classic design for omega- I'm in my late 20s and some would say it's "old fashioned" "conventional" but it suits who I am lol

Im going to take the advice and think about it for a couple of weeks. If I still want it I might get it!
My Goal: From 1st of Jan 2015 to 31st of December 2015 is to save 30000.

    48.78% towards 2015 target.

    105.3% towards 2014 target. :j
  • So did you buy it? Makes me want to get a smart watch now :)

Buying the right watch is quite difficult as many date so quickly that you will kick yourself that you bought something for several thousand and its now out of fashion . Rolex sub mariners and the Omega Seamaster range are a good buy . As someone else said make sure that its an automatic rather than a quartz movement too . Servicing is quite expensive for some too , they need servicing like anything mechanical , Omega just did my Seamaster for £250 . Stick up a photo of what you have bought .
Finally an Omega for £2480 when it should be £3800 sounds iffy to me . I bought a fake about ten years ago (was about 70% of the proper price ) and it was a perfect copy and had seiko internals once it was taken to bits . Be careful , buy from a reputable jeweller and buy a new one with all the paperwork etc .

I have had Omega watches for near on 30 years now and think they are brilliant so I would say go ahead if you can afford it and presumably if that is just one month's savings I am assuming you can. I always think savings for savings sake is just a waste unless you have an aim in mind, ie holiday, house, car, pension or debt repayment. If that is your only £2480 in the world I would say no. I spent just over that on an Omega watch for my 50th birthday although partly it was a gift from hb and mum combined. Did not regret it and I reckon it will see me out except for new batteries every 4 or 5 years. Think of it as an investment :)

I recently treated myself to a new watch. £6.99 from ALDI. Looks fine, tells the time and I don't have to fret about losing it or being mugged for it!

So you don't think buying yourself something nice that you can wear everyday is a good thing to do then !

I'll spend more money on something that does what I require better not on a brand name to impress others.

If something does something better be assured you are paying a brand premium for it .
