Monitors with adjustable height

I am hoping to get a Monitor no bigger than 20 inches in screen size which has an adjustable height stand. In the 1920 x 1080 resolution I can't find any that have good reviews and are adjustable. The nearest I can find is the Dell P2214 at 21.5 inches.

I was thinking of a 20 inch monitor with a stand of some sort, but I don't want my desktop to look cluttered. Any recommendations on a stand or 1920 x 1080 monitor would help. I am hoping to spend less than £130 for both.

If there are any photographers out there do you think the screens that swivel to give you a long vertical view of photos are of much help or unnecessary?

Have you thought about mounting the screen to the wall as monitors these days have vesa mounts on the back of them ?.

I've had two height-adjustable and swivellable monitors and to be honest I have never swivelled them, because I have a webcam perched on top, and the monitor and power cables get in the way. My current one is a Dell U2412M, 1920 x 1200.

I don't know why you would want a monitor screen so tiny as 20"!

20" is not tiny for a x1080 screen. For photography I agree a Dell x1200 would be better (but even it could do with losing a couple of inches.)

If you do only want a 1080 screen you are as well getting one that can swivel - although not for photographs.

Get a monitor with a VESA mounting point, then get a height adjustable stand and screw the two together.

Something like this stand (as the first thing I could find) would work:

  • I've always sat fairly close to the screen. That is with the screen about 20 inches in front of my face. I am just used to that.

I had a 23 inch all in one from Dell for a week or so and found it had some effect on my skin. It seemed to make my skin red which I guess is inflammation. My current monitor is 17 inches, and anything over 20 inches will seem huge to me.

I won't be mounting to the wall with my current computer desk and set up. I will take a look at the monitor stand and keep looking for a monitor. Thanks all.

 A computer monitor turned your skin red?! Blimey! What's it doing to your (much more sensitive) eyeballs?!

I was given a fancy Dell IPS monitor recently. The colours are much more vivid than on my cheap TN screen, but by god does it give me eyestrain! I seem to be continually adjusting the brightness and contrast.

My cheap BenQ monitor is LED-backlit, and I find that produces a much less "painful" image. I don't feel fatigued after looking at it for hours on end (as I do with the CFL-lit Dell.

I've never used the swivel on my monitors for photography, on the other hand I don't do portraits either.
The thing is for actual work we don't have brilliant vertical vision, our horizontal vision is much better so swivelled monitors is ok as quick glance but regular use I find its annoying.
  • OK, I am thinking out loud here. I spent all day trying to decide. I have narrowed it down to the Dell P2214H

    The BenQ BL2410PT

Or the lesser known Acer B226HQL

These are all adjustable in height and the screens all swivel to portrait mode. I gather that VA Panels have their own advantages over IPL with colour contrast and can have less flicker and be less harsh on the eyes. In fact BenQ monitors boast that they are easy on the eyes, an the lighting can be adjusted for reading and web browsing. I am hoping this would also translate to being less harsh on the skin.

The Acer has only a few reviews and a couple of those were bad plus I don't like Debenhams returns policy. The Dell is an IPS panel, and I think it might be harder on my eyes, even if the colours are more vibrant. Plus it might have a reflective or glossy screen.

So that leaves the BenQ which, at 24 inches, is much larger than I want, but fits the bill in every other way, and has some speakers, which are likely to be tinny, but handy. I am hoping Amazon's return policy would not be too bad if I wanted to return it, but I think this will be the monitor I'll buy tomorrow.

If anyone knows of a similar monitor in 1980 x 1080 that I haven't found which fits the above criteria then let me know.

If it were only Debenhams' returns policy putting you off that Acer, then why not buy direct from Acer at around the same price?
