Supermarkets which is best?

Have a look at mysupermarket.co.uk for the best, regularly updated prices in all the main stores. You'll probably find some items are consistently low in certain sm's, I opt for Aldi and Asda because I get good value and consistently good quality in them. And they're closer than most of the others so I save in fuel bills too.
aha yes, I did do this a year ago....0 -
You'll have to weigh up the prices against the cost of travel and how much time you have for shopping.
I find that Aldi (or Lidl) have the best consistent prices and then the nearest convenient SM (happens to be Sainsbury's) for anything they don't sell.
That works for me but if you have to travel miles then maybe you're better off in your nearest one.
I need to factor in a 20 minute trip at weekends or after work for eg Asda.
My Aldi/Lidl are easier as only 10 minutes away.
The huge 24 hour Tescos is good but a nightmare to get to and to park at! It is near the Aldi/Lidl - a 2 minute drive from them.0 -
The best supermarket is - the one that charges you the least for the things that you want.
All deals like BOGOF's are just smoke and mirrors.
Pick what YOU want, then see where you can get it the cheapest.
It's a customer lead market at the momment.
Boots points are not really worth it because most of the products they actually sell ( even when they do promotions ) can be purchased elsewhere for lesser prices.
I only just worked this out with Boots. I suppose when I *did* used to shop there and get good points they also had advantage card machines (now being phased out). Their 70% off Christmas/New Year sales are good though!0 -
I almost always check mysupermarket before I do my big monthly (or 6 weekly) shop and, almost always, Sainsburys is the cheapest. That is good news for me as I much prefer shopping there than any other supermarket. On the few occasions a different supermarket comes up cheaper it is usually a matter of pence so I am not bothered. If it is a larger difference I will still do my main shop in Sainsburys and just buy the cheaper items at the relevant shop.
I am lucky as I have a very large Tesco literally on the doorstep (although rarely use it as I don't like them), a Lidl and Farm Foods about 5 minutes away, an Aldi and an Asda about 10 minutes away (don't like Asda). Sainsburys is about 15 minutes away by car. The nearest Morrisons is almost 30 minutes away. I do like them but find I can never do a complete large shop thereThe world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie0 -

Wow that's amazing! Re Sainsbos. I have 2 of them, one is a huge one the other is a smaller one, the huge one is a 5 minute drive the smaller one is 2 mins drive. I don't have a farm foods.
The Asda for me, there is one, but it's in a bit of a dodgy area, right next to an industrial estate and it's murder to get to at weekends driving let alone any other day of the week or evening! Pity because I did/do think they had good deals. We also have another Sainsburys used to be their larger home one forget name which is massive but that's 10-15 mins drive, good selection though.
What's strange my friend is from Slough and she was extolling the virtues of a huge Tescos there.... but I rarely go to Slough! :cool:0 -
If there was one "best" which everyone could agree on , they would have a near monopoly of the market.
Only you can say which is best for you based on what criteria you use to judge and which ones you have acess to.And as people have said , it will probably work out using a couple of different ones for different things0 -
Although not exactly a supermarket, Costco is a shop where anybody can go to, it's not just a 'cash and carry' shop as I thought.
I was actually there today, with a friend who has a shop. I had a quick look at some prices
One, was for Persil soap powder 7kg (100 washes) which was £13.54 with the VAT. I had a look online now and it's about £23 online. Much cheaper than the normal supermarket ones too, although much bigger in size.
Surf 6.3kg was £10.78
I'm not too sure how Costco works, but no doubt a quick 'Google' search would bring up all the details.
I fancied the 90 inch TV too .. but my wife wasn't too keen. Spoilsport !!0 -
I find Asda has the best quality/price ratioThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

I find the only way ASDA can compete on price with Aldi is by offering multibuy options. At Aldi you only have to buy the quantity you want. Less waste.
Or offering something Aldi cannot. Aldi offer less products so their economies of scale on the things they do offer pricewise is good.
The branding is hit and miss in Aldi as it is unfamiliar but once you find "your" product it can be superior pricewise to Asda.
mysupermarket doesn't seem to work for me unless I strip out all the offers to get a more true comparison otherwise your favorite supermarket will always be the best value It really depends on what you buy or how you buy.
I prefer Aldi as there seems to have less subliminal marketing thrown at the customer making high priced good less tempting.
My criteria is overall price per month so has to be Aldi but other people may want shopping experience where I know I would spend a lot more per month.0 -
Depends what is meant by "best". I like Waitrose food, especially things like cheese and cold meat. They are too expensive for a regular shop though. We have a Morrisons 1 mile away. Mr T about 2 miles but everything else is a bit of a hike. An Aldi opened up recently but still 6 miles away. A Home Bargains has just opened up literally next door. I had not heard of them before and was amazed at some of their prices. Bought some dishwasher tablets half the price of supermarkets.0
