Supermarkets which is best?

MissD Posts: 95 Forumite
I admit for the past few years I've shopped at Sainsburys. Partly due to habit and also local store to where I live and also work.

I also shop at Morrisons and M&S as near to where I work.

At the weekend I was with a friend at Tescos. Seemed to be good offers. We discussed where to go, she said Morrisons was great for lunch deals (salads etc).

I have done Aldi once or twice and like the range but when you factor in driving there maybe not worth it for me a lot.

Anyway - how do you compare? What with all the Clubcards, Nectar points etc... who's best value or do you take pot luck?

I also do Boots points but a friend said they were not good value and I'd be better off going to a supermarket!

The best supermarket is - the one that charges you the least for the things that you want.

All deals like BOGOF's are just smoke and mirrors.

Pick what YOU want, then see where you can get it the cheapest.

It's a customer lead market at the momment.

Boots points are not really worth it because most of the products they actually sell ( even when they do promotions ) can be purchased elsewhere for lesser prices.

No one supermarket is cheapest, or best, for everything, and not everyone can shop at every supermarket.

Ignore points, it's not worth shopping in a particular supermarket just for the point.

If I were you I would make a list of the places you can shop, then a list of the items you want and compare the prices. The big supermarkets have their prices online, or you can use a comparison site.

Then you can do your shopping according to which shop sells the items you want the cheapest.

You should do this every time you shop, as often one supermarket will sell an item cheaper , then another supermarket will have a good offer on them.

Also, if you can, stock up on good offers when they are available. Just be sure you want/need the item, will use it before it goes off, or can freeze it. And that the offer is a genuine offer. Sometimes supermarkets will increase the price of an item when they put it on BOGOF, i.e. an item is normally £1, they increase the price to £1.90 and put it on BOGOF.

So when you see an offer, check what you would pay in the other supermarkets for the same item.

You'll have to weigh up the prices against the cost of travel and how much time you have for shopping.

I find that Aldi (or Lidl) have the best consistent prices and then the nearest convenient SM (happens to be Sainsbury's) for anything they don't sell.

That works for me but if you have to travel miles then maybe you're better off in your nearest one.

Have a look at mysupermarket.co.uk for the best, regularly updated prices in all the main stores. You'll probably find some items are consistently low in certain sm's, I opt for Aldi and Asda because I get good value and consistently good quality in them. And they're closer than most of the others so I save in fuel bills too.

    Play them against each other.

Lidl n aldi are the best in my opinion for all round quality and no nonsense pricing.

Asda is my other choice of supermarket. Their price guarantee is not to be sniffed at and is the best price matching offer by far.

    Asda and Lidl.
  • When you say 'best' do you mean cheapest? Or do you take other factors into account (ie shopping experience, product range, convenience, customer service)?

I do most of my day to day shopping at Sainsburys. I know that they are more expensive for some things but it is convenient to get to, is a pleasant environment, I like their product ranges and I think their customer service is quite good.

I also shop in morrisons/asda/Lidl from time to time to take advantage of offers or if there's something they stock that sainsbury's doesn't. For some things I also go to Costco.

For me, sainsbury's is 'best' but I would not shop there exclusively.

I think it's a shame they are changing as i like collecting points and have benefited from a lot of discounted restaurant trips because of it, it won't affect my loyalty though as I'm loyal to whoever offers the best price.
Actually it won't affect me at all as I'm emigrating to New York next year February. lol

That's the thing like you say they all change their prices so much! Or their policies. I never know which is cheaper so stick to deals from M&S (not bad), Waitrose (forgot them), and do the occasional Morrisons. But as Sainsbos are my nearest local to where I live I shop there a lot.

Oh sorry I did meant cheapest but also product range and convenience. I agree with your para re day to day shopping at Sainsbos!

My brother has Costco membership but I'd have to drive and it's 20 mins.

I do look for other offers and quite like Waitrose so if/and I get to their nearest one (near my work) I get stuff there. I like for example Burts Bees moisturiser recently half price 10.00 GBP from 20.00 GBP and when shower gels are reduced.

    Asda and Lidl.

I think I will try them both and see.

Asda is a PITA to get to. One is a drive or tram ride (I don't drive to work) or I can get to it on train journey home from work. Do Asda deliver to home?

The Lidl is nearby a 10 minute drive though.
