Need advice on holiday disaster!

Hi

As the title says I am looking for advice on a holiday disaster. Me and my (now) wife recently got married in Cyprus. Unfortunately on our way out our wedding luggage got destroyed at Paphos airport. The airline in question and their baggage claim department's response has left me very unhappy and I want to know how I can take this further. I will provide more details when needed for anyone who can help.

Thank you in advance

Simon

    Insurance?
  • Yes we're insured but that would only cover a certain amount and I feel we are due compensation for this. I have pictures of the substantial damage. A lot of the destroyed items were one off hand-made items that have no receipt and the wedding dress was bought second-hand and therefore had no receipt either.

I think the airline only pays for the bags and the insurance for the contents

not on your scale but we claimed for a new bag last year and got one without any issues after it was wrecked, but we didnt bother about the the few ruined t shirts as we were told to claim from insurance
  • I should explain further why I feel we should be compensated. Instead of being able to enjoy our days before the wedding and properly relax we had to spend time trying to replace items and repair the damage to the wedding dress. My suit was completely ruined so we had to go and search for a replacement. The holiday was somewhat dampened by the event and looking back it's still very upsetting for us both to remember that moment when we discovered the state of our luggage.

I understand that, but I dont think airlines are responsible for the items in your bags, that is what insurance is for.

    I may be wrong though

what do the t and c of the airline in question say

True but they are responsible for the damage, their baggage handlers are at least. One of the workers at the airport said "their has been a problem outside". From the looks of the damage the bag had been dragged along concrete under the wheels of the baggage truck.
  • The airline's response was "these things happen from time to time". Which really is not good enough.

    Which airline?

  • The airline's booking conditions will include information about their liability for damaged baggage.

You've ticked the box to agree to this when booking.

If you think they are failing to comply with the conditions complain. They might increase their offer. If they still refuse, take them to court.

If you feel their terms are unfair, take them to court under unfair contracts legislation. This is a toughie though. Those terms are probably pretty much standard for the whole industry.
