Guising as it's called in Scotland (and parts of Ireland I'm told) has its origins in dressing up to scare the evil ghosts and !!!!!ies away on this night when they were said to be abound. The treat given was payment for this service.
Feel free to Google. Or not?
When I was a kid out guising we all had a "turn" to do in order to receive our treats. Some sang songs, danced, told jokes etc. It was definitely frowned upon if you didn't have some sort of act, and those kids I saw out tonight had some sort of entertainment to perform before getting sweets.When The Fun Stops Stop0 -

* they censored g.h.oulies? Why??
Pretty much the same as my experience growing up. A lot of work went into costumes as well! No shop bought stuff. My Dad once managed to get me forensic white paper suit to make a ghost costumeAnother year he dismantled an old (real :eek:) fur coat and turned into a bear outfit

Not necessarily but she's pretty crucial. I'd just be back to square one.
Anyway, there are worse things going on in the world I'm just feeling like a deflated balloon at the moment.

Luckily I only had very little ones knocking. I have to say they all had manners and said thank you for the sweets and fruit. Id never dream of giving money but I do enjoy seeing them dressed up and having fun.0
