TUT! Halloween is an old Celtic tradition that celebrated the end of summer when people believed ghosts and spirits visited. They stole it from us :p

    Debt-free and Proud!
Potential (very very likely) drop-out on a show I've been working on developing for three weeks. It's gutting.

I've just eaten a mini-chocolate bar and some popcorn because I'm an emotional eater *sobs into chocolate wrapper*

Granted the commercialism of Halloween has come from America, but the whole dressing up in scary costumes and receiving treats from householders on All Souls' Night originated in Great Britain and is far older than you might think.
Guising as it's still called in Scotland (and parts of Ireland I'm told) has its origins in dressing up to scare the evil ghosts and !!!!!ies away on this night when they were said to be abound. The treat given was payment for this service.
Feel free to Google. Or not?

When I was a kid out guising we all had a "turn" to do in order to receive our treats. Some sang songs, danced, told jokes etc. It was definitely frowned upon if you didn't have some sort of act, and those kids I saw out tonight had some sort of entertainment to perform before getting sweets.
