Our DFS sofas have lasted 16yrs!! Really comfy and have survived 2 babies growing into teenagers, a dog and a mother and in-laws flopping into the seats or sitting on the arms!! We have just parted with them this week only because we had a flood and the lounge is being redecorated and new carpet so it was time to let them go. They had washable covers and have been great. We sold the 3 seater on ebay for a few quid as it was in better condition than the 2 seater. We have just bought a leather suite from DFS, not cheap but I really don't expect it to last as long as nothing is made to last. We went to every sofa place and DFS was the only one that had sofas we really both liked!

Currently we have eight sofas......don't ask :o:D - two Multiyorks (8 years old, still in pristine condition despite a lot of use, but not the most comfortable), one John Lewis (2 years old and wearing very well), a Habitat loveseat (again has stood up well to the rigours of daily use), a handmade knole - the dogs' seat of choice, so getting a bit worn/smelly, but otherwise extremely well made and only cost around £600 about ten years ago.

All these are upholstered in fabric as opposed to leather.

We also have three antique sofas - all eBay purchases - dating from the 1980s to an antique Art Nouveau with its original (slightly moth-eaten!) fabric :D With the exception of the one I'm currently sitting in (the '80s one, which is surprisingly cosy and only cost £50 ;)), these were purchased for their looks rather than comfort.

Personally I'd recommend the John Lewis for withstanding everyday family life, although we have previously had a DFS leather sofa that we were actually very pleased with - and at less than half the price of the JL. After six years we sold the DFS on eBay and managed to recoup £300 which was testimony to the condition/construction.

We've also had an M&S fabric covered sofa (bought from a friend for a teenager's room) and we didn't think that was particularly comfortable. Years ago we had a pair of Tetrad Alicia sofas and these were possibly the most snuggly (and very forgiving with their washable, no-need-to-iron covers) sofas we've ever had.......

We've had M&S ones for a couple of months. Hardly used and foam is awful. Thankfully 50% paid for with vouchers won in competition but dreading the complaints procedure.

The repair service is excellent, we inherited my mums sofas when she died and one of the corners failed on the sofa. They honoured the warranty and came out the next day and fixed the issue.
