Have you looked into changing the dates of your trip? What do the t&cs of your travel provider(s) say about date changes?0

Little bit confused with this. Did he not apply for the time off, before booking the holiday and get it approved?
I have worked as a manager in many retail stores and it was always that when you wanted to go on holiday, that you gained approval from the company, or the inline manager for the dates with a written application. All my undermanagers were the same, that the holiday was signed off as ok, as then we could pre-plan their coverage
Not everyone is as organised as you though!
I got holiday verbally approved then taken away after I had already booked the holiday at Easter this year. Luckily as I hated the job I just left anyway and ignored their threats, then when I got back they "let me off with a warning". Though that wouldn't really be an option for a manager!0 -

If he was given to understand that he could have the time off, but now circumstances have changed so that he is needed at work, that might be something that insurance would cover. Perhaps his employer could at least be helpful with this? I do suggest that you read the insurance policy very thoroughly...0 -

I never said that I was organised, it was company policy. 35 years in retail management, meant that you always made a holiday request in writing and had it approved. If you take a verbal approval, then it is your word against whoever said it is ok and you have no comeback, as you yourself has stated and the same with the OP.As Manuel says in Fawlty Towers: " I Know Nothing"0 -

Have to agree with this. It's not about being super efficient, I thought it would be obvious that you would need to get explicit written permission to have time off; especially over Christmas in retail.
The only thing they can hope for is the good will of the employer; although from what the OP says, this isn't an option.
It was unwise to book and pay for a £2.5K holiday over Christmas without getting the time off confirmed in writing. The insurance will definitely not cover it.
Sorry OP, but the only hope (as far as I can see,) is for you to sell the holiday to a friend or family member or neighbour or colleague (of yours.) See if the names can be switched over.
And then rebook it for next year, and make sure you get the holiday time off in writing.
Hope it works out. We all make mistakes, so don't worry about it. I am sure it'll be OK in the end.

If he was supposed to get written permission and failed to do so insurance won't cover him, I can't even see any policy paying out on verbally agreed holiday regardless of how much OP's husband is needed. Especially considering he is a retail MANAGER and should be fully aware that this is the busiest period of the year.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0
