best sim for uk & eu

Hello, my wife has a phone I gave her and she needs a sim for it, she won't make a lot of uk calls, she wants it mainly for when we go on holiday to Europe, she doesn't want a contract she just wants to pay say £10 a time to top it up, which will be the best sim for her

AFAIK, the limit for outgoing roaming calls is €0.19 in EU.
I am pretty sure that without a bundle all networks charge very close to the limit.

In UK for occasional use '3' is the cheapest (requires a 3g-capable phone).

Three, especially if you are visiting countries included in their feel at home abroad deal. Even for UK calls, texts and data they are among the cheapest.

You need a bundle to qualify for 'feel at home' rates. Otherwise it's 18.8p/min.
Even with a bundle, 'feel at home' covers only calls to/from UK, not to a EU country.

Even with a bundle, 'feel at home' covers only calls to/from UK numbers, not to a EU country.

Clarified a small point, Feel at Home would also allow free in allowance calls to other UK mobiles that were in any country.

Can be handy if Mr and Mrs and kids were all on Three if they were in a Feel at Home destination.

  • For holiday use have you thought about using e-mail, Skype, or Viber via free WiFi -which is available in many hotels, bars and shopping centres?

In April the European Parliament voted to end roaming charges in the EU by December 2015, in the mean time as others have said Three's PAYG SIM is good value for occasional use and may be of benefit if you visit their "Feel at Home" countries prior to Dec 2015.

+1 for Skype on wifi and certain Three offers.

Also take a look at Toggle - 3p/minute to call landlines in a dozen Toggle countries and 3p or 9p/minute to mobiles when using 'local numbers'. See https://www.togglemobile.com for details.

But minimum top up is £20.

But once you have topped up the toggle sim with £20, the credit doesn't expire (as long as you use it every so often), so you can use the £20 over multiple holidays.

    Yes, I'm a Toggle fan.

You can have a permanent 'foreign' number for £5 a year, bargain. People in the US can call me on my American number as if it were a local call, ditto people in Switzerland on my Swiss number
