  • I'd be happy if petrol went down and stayed at 99.9p a litre at least.

no , but I do remember there were no breathalizer laws in those days , and a police officer used to escort you home to make sure you had no problems

Ah, yes - I should have stressed that I wasn't buying the petrol and the whisky around the same time. :o

The first gallons I bought were 4 shillings and tenpence ha'penny. :p

Can you hazard a guess at the year?

    4s 10d 1/2 = 58.5d = 24.375p

Per the AA chart that puts you at around 1961/1962, but potentially anywhere between 1955 and 1963. :)

(As a kid I bought a 6d bag of sweets one week, then a 2.5p bag the following week using the same coinage).

If Channel 4 Dispatches were to come up with a story like:

Hamas (Palestinian) are so desperate to stave off annihilation, they form a devil's pact with their Islamic State counter parts, and use their covert international connections to ship oil. Like the horse meat scandal, TESCO, Sanisburys et al. inadvertently buy cheap petrol refined from contraband oil.

Would people boycott the cheap petrol?

Good detective work there bod - it was 1962 - and I was a student with a moped which seemed to run forever on a single gallon.

I remember having a Esso tiger's tail tied to the tank-cap.

At the BP station we had BP-Zoom ready-mixed 2-stroke for mopeds - but my moped never went zoom - it went put-put-put. ;)

And you were buying your sweets in 1971, I would guess.

Happy days - and with whisky at half-a-crown - sometimes happy daze. :p

sainsburys is currently the cheapest in oldham.
asda and morrisons are just behind by 1p on both.

and way out by 2p on unleaded and 3p on diesel are tesco.

and tesco's wonder why people are deserting them in droves?

stop trying to "have one over" on your customers!

The only reason I buy my petrol at Tesco is because of the money off I get because I shop at Tesco and the clubcard points.

It's actually cheaper, if there are no deals at Tesco, for me to buy my petrol at Asda using my 1p in the £ cashback credit card even allowing for Tesco points using my wife's Tesco credit card.
over 73 but not over the hill.
  • Friends of ours fill their car at the local American airbase and she was saying it costs her 50...at which point I cut in and explaimed 50P!!! but she corrected me as she pays 50c a litre!!!

BUT...actually...the Government could make all our lives slightly easier immediately if they didnt add VAT on to the price of petrol AFTER they add on all the other dirty little taxes and excise duties that are also piled on to the cost of petrol in this country!

It seems "wrong" to charge a tax on top of all the other taxes that are added in...but that could just be me.

3% Cashback with Santander 123 credit card, for fuel from major Supermarkets. Not tempted? I just wish I drove more miles.

And don't forget that we have already paid tax on the money we have earned in order to have the money to pay for the tax on the fuel.
