What to do.....

Ok so this is pretty lame compared to the obvious personal trauma being suffered by the poor soul that can't release their hands from their keyboard this morning but can anyone give me ideas as to what I can do with my 2 yo to keep him entertained today??

We moved to Cornwall at the end of July and are now pretty rural....no bus stop within 3 miles.....nearest village about 1/2 an hour walk but across one of the main roads into the centre of the county. On a Monday my OH drives up to Devon, in our only car, and doesn't come back until about midnight tomorrow so we are pretty much stranded (as we are every week). This hasn't caused any issues so far as we have a massive garden and have spent every week in the garden making den's, planting flowers, feeding the farm animals that surround us etc but this week, for the first time, it's peeing down and I am at a loss as to what to do as his concentration span is somewhat limited and he can be a destructive little begger lol (I spent over an hour constructing a dinosaur for him to play with and it took him 4 seconds to pull it apart and break it!)

Any ideas? I just don't want him to get bored.

Wellies and waterproofs and going for a walk to splash in puddles?

Got some crafty stuff? Stickers etc to make a picture?

    Bake buns?

    Will he watch a dvd?

Make a 'den' out of sheet's and a couple of chairs.

Throw a sheet over the table and sit and eat a carpet picnic under it.

    DVDs, jigsaws.

When all else fails call your local taxi firm and get them to take you somewhere you want to go. £10 to save your sanity is worth it

Good god he's found aload of play dough

I think the problem with crafty stuff is me! I'm not very creative and I hate mess lol!

A taxi is more like £20, that's one way, to the nearest place with anything happening. Thankfully I pick up another car next week so this is the last week that we'll be stranded and I've been researching different toddler groups and clubs for us to go to on a Monday and Tuesday as neither of us have any friends here and we need to start meeting other children/mum's!!!

At the moment he's absolutely entranced by the play dough (thought I'd thrown it out!!) and I may even get over my fear of mess and get the paints out :D
  • Cardboard boxes? Hours of fun.

If he doesn't want to be a robot, you can always use black bin bags to make Batman / Catwoman outfits. Did the job for me when I had to entertain my mother once.

A: It goes without saying that this site's about MoneySaving.

Q: Why are some Board Guides sometimes unpleasant?
A: We very much hope this isn't the case. But if it is, please make sure you report this, as you would any other forum user's posts, to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com.

  • Baking! When I was small I loved making stuff in the kitchen when the weather was horrible. You feel all warm and cozy with the oven going and get something lovely to eat at the end. If you make fairy cakes or cookies he can decorate them too which will kill some more time.
  • I agree with the cardboard boxes, completely forgot about that.

If there's a stream near you, how about pooh sticks? In case the filter gets that, I'm talking about the game that Christopher Robin plays with Winnie the Pooh.

If all else fails, remember, keep calm and hug a spaniel!
  • Get out lots of pots and pans, spoons etc. and use them as percussion instruments... as long as you can stand the racket, that is.

Search for 'Stomp' on YouTube - very inspiring, though a lot more musical than a 2-year-old with kitchen equipment is likely to be!
