Halifax has one for each branch
Different banks do things differently0 -
Use this facility to determine a branch address from a sort code:

They also use 30-xx-xx for business accounts, whereas a personal account at the same branch is 87-xx-xx .0 -
with respect to the knowledgeable people on this board this is too important to rely on information from here. If its wrong you will have a lot of trouble getting your money back.0

For a table showing which Sort Codes relate to which banks, go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Sort_Codes_of_the_United_Kingdom
Abbey use both 09-01-26 and 09-01-27. They also use 09-00-00 for their old accounts that are still using Roll Numbers. In this case, use 09-00-00 followed by 00000000 as an account number, then complete the roll number (in full with no spaces) in the reference field eg A/123456897JOE.
Most ex-Building societies that are now banks have converted to 8 digit account numbers, however some have not and still use another bank to process payments on their behalf.
If you are in any doubt at all, contact the beneficiary and get them to check the payment details before you process a payment. If it goes to the wrong person, it is almost impossible to get it back.0 -
can't you have a guess and get the cashier to check if the sort code and account number correspond to the person you are paying in for. i do it if i'm paying in for my bro /sis to avoid any hassle. and they can give you an answer coz they're not giving out any real information, just confirming it for you.0

As the OP was 9 months ago .......... one suspects they've either guessed or been sued for non-payment by now?
But guessing someone's Bank details in order to pay them ..... is pretty damned stupid. Your money could be going anywhere. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0
