I'm with fizzy feet. Ikea cots are great. My parents bought one for my sister when she haf her baby (she lived a home for a year) and I use it with my kids and my eldest is 2 1/2 and still goes in it. Its a lot smaller than a conventional cot and also has different height settings ( I think). I was going to buy one instead of a crib as I think they are a waste of money but one of my friends loaned me her crib. Have you thought of checking out your local freecycle to see if anyone has one they want to get rid of? It would be free then - saving you more money.
Good luck0 -
I agree with others, i wouldnt use a travel cot as a long term bed. They just arent supportive enough and will kill your back bending in and out all the time.Bringing up 2 handsome boys and 1 gorgeous girl the MSE way!Joseph born 19th December 2001Matthew born 8th August 2007Tara born 23rd January 20110

magali is thinking about space rather than price I think. However unless you are planning on folding the cot up when baby is awake (in which case you still need somewhere to store the mattress) then you won't save any space at all.
Most travel cots are not very comfortable and some are quite flimsy. I wouldn't have wanted my baby sleeping in one permanently, though they are fine for short stays.
Will you be staying in your existing flat for a long time, magali? Is it owned or rented? If there is a chance that you could move somewhere a bit bigger by the time the baby is 4 months old, I'd be inclined to see if you can get hold of a moses basket or carry cot to tide you over until then (borrow one if you can or ask on freecycle. They should be easy to get hold of as baby's only use them for such a short period, and you have a few months to try and get one.). These don't take up very much space at all. Even if you aren't planning on moving, if you had one to start off with, when baby has arrived you could try out some travel cots belonging to friends with your little one as a tester, and form your own view as to whether you would be happy with this as a long term solution.0 -
My friend was in a small flat when she had her lo I would also recommend an ikea cot takes up less space than a travel cot and seemed much more confortable.Booo!!!0

I used a travel cot with mini Panda for a couple of months, we had a huge cot bed which would not fit in our room, and a moses basket which we were going to use as we were about to move. Panda had other ideas though and would not sleep in the moses basket and as we did not have the room to put up the main cot he had to use the travel cot. Ours come with a bassinet though so did not have the problems of getting him in and out, he was fine in it and slept sound. If you do get one I would highly recommend one with a basinett ours was from mothercare http://www.mothercare.com/gp/product/B000ILEQIS/sr=1-7/qid=1185134696/ref=sr_1_7/026-2718723-5899657?ie=UTF8&m=A2LBKNDJ2KZUGQ&n=44360031&mcb=core - sorry cant do short links!!!
Also has a change top which is great for space saving as we didnt bother to get a changing unit.Any spelling mistakes are entirely on purpose to check you're paying attention0 -
I had the cheap Ikea cot for my first and it was fab, its smaller than the travel cot I had and it lasted right till he was nearly 3 when I put hi in a big bed.Work like you don't need money,Love like you've never been hurt,And dance like no one's watchingSave the cheerleader, save the world!0

I was going to recommend an Ikea cot too :money: , as the others have said, I think they are slightly smaller than most cots and great value too!

I've often used my travel cot for long periods of time.
It's adjustable so can be set to be deeper or shallow, has a night light in built and even vibrates.
Its comfortable for the baby and very safe (whoever's saying that it isn't!?) and easy to move around."One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -
I live in a one bedroom flat and the baby is due for end of november, because of the space I am thinking of getting a travel cot that can be used from birth but will get a better matress, what do you think about comfort and safety?
If it is just space and not cost, then please do consider getting a proper sleeping arrangement for baby, there is nothing more important than a proper bed.
If you are after something that can easily be folded away, consider this company. http://www.macraftindustries.co.uk/products.htm#folding-wooden-cots
It is a folding wooden cot, so will fold away to a smaller size if you have people round, or you just want more space in the day.
The company was recommended to me by a holiday cottage owner for my mother-in-law to purchase when we go to stay. My son first slept in one in the holiday cottage and you wouldn't have known it wasn't a standard cot, very sturdy.0
