Its a myth that tax is higher in the South.

On a salary of £30,000 (€37,500) in the UK the average person (normal tax code, no student loan etc) would take home £1946.23 per month.

In the South of Ireland they would take home €2,543.27 (£2,034.61)

Also - married couples allowances (would take home €2,625).

On a £12,000 income you would take home £926 in the North, or £973 in the south.

Therefore most people would probably be paying less tax unless over about £32,000 (And higher than this if married or a single parent).

Tax needs to considered along with NI (or PRSI etc)

Well said, Brits out and Ireland united forever.

That's all true, it's when you start making a bit more money that you really pay, which is not the case in the uk. However the highest tax in the uk only kicks in at 150,000 which doesn't concern very many.
Anyway, all these figures will be irrelevant after tomorrow's budget so we can discuss this tomorrow night.

Sorry but there is not going to be a 32 county state .The republic dont want us and they cant afford us .

I think they want us ok but it's cost prohibitive. Then again the UK might pay them to get rid of us. :D

I'm led to believe that 80% of the NI population want the six counties to remain.

It would be nice if Donegal rejoined the UK, it's a forgotten county within the 26.

I once met a Donegal nationalist who thought Donegal should be an independent state like the Isle of Man or jersey.

I'm sitting in the sun outside a cafe in athlone ( what's going on with the weather?) reading yesterday's papers. Well, well - tax cuts for high earners predicted for the budget. Some votes for the socialists from that - not Sinn Fein.

Just had a fill of diesel at approx 1.11 a litre - in a car which would cost at least 50% more here than in NI.

So many variables, it's hard to make comparisons.

    Anyway, budget in the morning.

Not if you watch Winning Streak on a Saturday night. There's always somebody from Donegal on there.

It is a bit odd though that the most northerly point in Ireland is in the south!

Measured by medical card access - that is, considered too poor to pay for health care - Donegal is one of the poorest counties . Who buys lotto tickets? Those who need to win - the poor. Same in the states - it's always some dude who lives in a trailer or a ghetto who wins those 100 million dollar prizes. They're the people buying the tickets.

    I couldn't agree more.

Sadly, buying tickets they can't afford for prizes they're unlikely to win. What a swindle.

That's the sad things about lotteries. No guarantee the prizes will go to those who most need them - me for a start.
