I think the system is a bit more complicated /sophisticated than that - and I'm not sure if they can reliably do speed.
I haven't seen a single wire counter for many years as they only count the number of axles - not the number of vehicles.
I think there is a time difference between the twin wires which is able to differentiate between a short vehicle such as a car and a long multi-axled vehicle such as an articulated truck.
You're probably right, it's been nearly ten years since he did it, technology has moved on no doubt.0
