Some of them I could understand might be there to monitor speed but others I cant (1 is between 2 round abouts, you would need a ferrarri to build up enough speed to be speeding between them and even then you might run out of space for breaking).

"Speeding" doesnt necessarily mean the criminal offence of going above the speed limit. If there is a blind bend in an urban area the speed limit is 30mph but that doesnt mean its necessarily sensible to go round that bend at that speed if there are parking spaces immediately on its exit etc.

If a few of the parked cars have been hit they may measure the average speed of vehicles going round to see if people are within the limit but still going too fast for the layout and thus possibly change the parking, change the signage etc.

Spot on, one for volume, two for speed.

I think the system is a bit more complicated /sophisticated than that - and I'm not sure if they can reliably do speed.

I haven't seen a single wire counter for many years as they only count the number of axles - not the number of vehicles.

I think there is a time difference between the twin wires which is able to differentiate between a short vehicle such as a car and a long multi-axled vehicle such as an articulated truck.

the systems that they use now are a sophisticated bit of kit and the can monitor numbers, type and speed of vehicles that cross them, see page six of the link below to confirm

the speed monoring is to give an average speed of traffic in that section at different times of the day rather than monitoring the speed of individual vehicles, it is data gathering rather than speed enforcement

is this the 300 million pound Manchester Airport Relief Road?

the roads around the airport have been a nightmare for a while now, what with the metrolink coming to the airport and on ringway road west near the Hilton hotel

Thats the one, I dont really live that close to the airport so not noticed the traffic. I live near one of the ends of that road as it stands now so sadly no trams down here.

yes. I love the road, its like something off top gear when they go to roads in the middle of nowhere in europe somewhere to find a road with nobody on it.

I wonder if they are sophisticated enough to cope with me parking on the wires for six hours like I did the other week. :rotfl:

We have a load of them at the moment too as there is a bit of a knot of 1 way circles going around the town centre here but there is a proposal to make the roads two way so presumably they are trying to guestimate where the cars are going to justify, or not, the change of the system.
