Wax Circles / Discs for Jam making anyone?

Hi
Am hoping someone here can give me a bit of advice...!
I made my first ever chutney last week (spiced apple, yum) and it's in the small jars from lakeland (http://www.lakeland.co.uk/F/product/3819_3818).
I didn't know about wax circles etc then so I just put the lakeland covers over the top with an elastic band (http://www.lakeland.co.uk/preserving-presentation-packs/F/C/storing-preserving/C/storing-preserving-preserving/product/12184_12185/pgs/20) but I guess they're not very well sealed so am wondering what I should do with them?
I guess I could just get the jam jar lids from lakeland and put those on? Or would the wax circles be a better job? And if so, would I need to heat the jars of chutney in the oven before putting the circles on??
Thanks in advance for any advice!!0 -
Not sure but I am sure someone will come along with advice - I have just been re-using jars and sterilising the jars and the lids...MFW #185

Hi
I have been given some jars, some are lovely shapes (perfect for gifts) but the lids aren't too great. They are all different sizes so it would be difficult to get lids for them.
I think the only option is to use the jars with waxed circles and covers, but I am worried about the jars being different sizes. I am going to order some waxed circles from John Lewis - do they need to fit the top of the jar perfectly?
Thanks0 -
Just had another thought ... do I need to use the special jam covers you can buy or is it okay to cover them with nice fabric??0

I made a batch of marmalade a while ago & thewax circles didn't fit perfectly & it seems ok, I used the cellophane circles as well to keep it as sterile as poss & put fabric on top.

Is it absolutely essential to use the wax discs? As long as the lid is sterilised is it not possible just to use old jam jars and their lids?
I was planning to make jam today and have everything ready but realised I have no discs. I cannot even think of anywhere near me that is likely to sell themThe world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie0 -
I've never used waxed discs, just fill jars right up to the brim :-)0

Jars with metal lids are fine, never used waxed disks myself. Just make sure you sterilize both the jar and the lids and pot while the jam is still warm/hot and they will be absolutely fine0
