  • There's a few decent choices here on Ebay. I got some from a cake decorating stall at my local market today. £1.10 for 24 wax discs, cellophane covers, elastic bands and labels. The labels are more like stickers, handy for my own reference but not very good for presents.

I've just made some blackberry and apple jam with free fruit and jars as well, I didn't use wax circles, we put the lids on the jars when the jam was hot, and it has sealed the jars nicely. The chutney I made a year ago also didn't have wax circles on and they are still fine - no mould at all!

So you might not need to worry to be honest. I couldn't find any cheap wax circles, and the ones I found were going to cost more than the sugar cost me to buy - so doubling the cost of my jam!

BTW I have found sugar for 59p a kilo in both Savers and Farmfoods recently, much better than nearly £1 a kilo at Mr T.

That's what I usually do, but for the big C in a few months time, all the family get preserves and it doesn't look too good getting Jam in a Sacla jar....so I use the wax and the cellophane covers for pressies.....it just looks nicer.

I reuse the lids that come with the jars, but if I want them to look posher, I cut a circle either from brown paper or pretty paper napkins and tie on over the lids.

I have experimented and made 3 jars of carrot jam today (using an old Mrs Beeton recipe that tastes like apricot!) and don't have any wax discs.

I have unbleached baking paper - could I cut out some discs and use that? or something else instead? Cling film? Do they have to have something between the jam and the lid ?

    Hi Burlesque Babe,

I've never put anything between the jam and the lid and not had any problems as if the jam is poured into the jar hot it creates it's own vaccum.

This thread may help: Wax Circles / Discs for Jam making anyone?

I'll add your thread to it later to keep the discussion in one place.

    many thanks :D
I've had a look at the thread and for experimentation I've done 2 jars with just a lid and 1 with tight cling film and a lid.

We have just moved and have a huge fig tree which should yield loads of fruit in about 6 weeks so this is a nice little experiment with some carrots that had gone a bit wangy in the fridge before moving on to big batches of stuff :D

Thanks for the help. Jam covers are the wax and cellophane discs used instead of screw lids.
