C4 cactus or Captur

I ordered a captur a month or so ago and was told to expect it first week in november. It now turns out there is a massive delay and it could be January before I get it.

I was looking and seen the C4 Cactus which I liked but it had not been released (nor had any prices) when I ordered my captur.

Im now thinking I might cancel the captur and order the cactus instead.

Its probably a little too early for anyone to have driven around in a cactus yet (I never thought I would ever say that sentence) but just wondering what peoples thoughts are if they had the choice?

  • The Cactus is weird. Saw one the other day. Mind you, weird as it is, at least it's not a Renault, so it has that going for it.

One thing I did notice when I looked at the spec, was that it seemed to have a very low towing capacity (whether that's true across all models I'm not sure, but the one I saw had a braked towing limit of 825KG). That may not be important to you, but if it were you should be aware.

Not sure I'd choose either, TBH, I'd go for anything other than a Renault, and the Cactus is just a bit too 'out there' for me, but if you like it, why not?

Everyone slates renault but is that because of their past or are current cars still pretty crap?

    Towing isnt an issue.

It is a bit out there I agree, I would end up going with a toned down one - silver/dark grey with matching bubble wrap or whatever fancy name they decide to give it. Im not looking at lime green with white bubbles or anything.

Gotta be the Cactus, spotted a white one yesterday, looked great and bigger than a Captur.

To me the Captur looks like a Clio on stilts, I'd rather have a Clio than it and a Cactus over all of them.

Speak as you find. I had a Mk1 2.0litre Megane from new for 14 years with only one major bill for a new aircon compressor. Now have had a Mk3 Megane for 4 years. Faultless to date.
Renault sales are up 17.5% this year (includes Dacia - wait for them to be slagged off!).
I do like the look of the Captur. Lots of passenger and luggage space. Certainly it's a 'Clio on stilts' but all the manufacturers are offering such derivatives now.

Fair enough. I can only speak from experience too - 12 brand new Renault Meganes and Lagunas in a fleet, £250K worth of lost time in the first 12 months. Gearbox failures at <100 miles. Random shattering rear windows, timing belt tensioner failures. Electric windows which would drop when it rained, electric mirrors that wouldn't adjust. Random alarm activations, central locking which would randomly unlock. Injector failures, fuel pump failures, turbo failures. Airbag faults, cruise control failures. Wheels going oval, poor quality trim, rattles. Dashboard failures and fuesboxes which let water in. Broken window regulators... etc.

Just about every part of a car which could fail, failed. After three years, during which not one of the vehicles hadn't been off the road with a breakdown, they were replaced with 12 Skodas. Not one of them broke down in the first 12 months, except when a driver filled one with petrol. We got rid of two of the Skodas after the first year, because we were able to cope with just 10 since none were ever off the road for more than a service.

Put me off Renaults for life that did. Since then, my experience of colleagues' Renaults has just confirmed that although they may well be nice to drive, there are just way too many failures to call them reliable. It does seem that reliable Renaults are still, sadly, the exception rather than the rule.

Have to admitt I'm biased as we took delivery of a Cactus 3 weeks ago. (White 110 petrol flair)

It is a love it/hate it type of car but if you 'get it' and like it then have a test drive

Whatcar Magazine (sept 2014) compared the 110bhp petrol Cactus with the 0.9 Tce petrol Captur (and Kia Soul & Nissan Juke) and overall the Cactus would be much cheaper to run. They got 50mpg in their real world test driving route against 34.3mpg for the renault (despite the official combined economy figures for the cars being similar, 60.1mpg & 56.5mpg respectively). This is mainly due to the economy of the Citroen being down to them simply making it very light. I have averaged over 50mpg on the first tank (brim to brim)

If you're spending that much money why have a boring car?

I had ordered the diesel captur which I do like, I enjoyed driving it and settled into it pretty quickly. The engine was quiet, it drove well and was comfortable - that does 70+ mpg... according to their figures.

But im not waiting until January. I want a nice new car that warms up quickly during winter. I also have to drive down to essex in December and im not doing that in my corsa. I have been told to hold fire until monday when they will get confirmation of whether it will be delivered in time... thankfully my dad is in the leasing business so I know hes not going to fill me full of crap on delivery dates to keep me as a customer.

Tilt, a member on here, also seems to be the only owner of reliable fiats. I like the new twingo, but there is no way in hell i'd own a Renault or indeed any french car out of warranty. The french are capable of making a reliable car, the Yaris is pretty good, just not with one of their badges stuck on.
