My new passport was hand-delivered by a private courier in a regular envelope and he only needed to buzz in as the front door leads to a communal area. No ID or signature was required.
Mine only worked 9-5 weekdays (oddly enough when I was at work as are most other people) and was unable to commit to delivering on any particular day, let alone morning / afternoon.

Saying MY signature was required he refused to put it in my letter box but would deliver to my place of work - where it was put in with the ordinary mail WITHOUT any signature. It eventually surfaced 3 days later

A friend of mine found out her daughter's new passport was delivered by Royal Mail to the wrong address. The address it went to was identified by RM (but not by photo) and the people living there denied it had been delivered at their address.

Luckily the passport office cancelled it and a new one was sent out which she did receive ok. But it does mean that somewhere there is a passport which could possibly have been tampered with.

The 'old' set up appeared to be via courier with no sig/photo of door taken, except areas deemed a risk where RM SD was used.
No idea what their set up is now.

I applied online to renew my expired passport. When the new UK Passport arrived, it came via normal 1st class mail with the word "PASSPORT SERVICE" printed boldly on the envelope, no signature was required, and pretty obvious to anyone what was inside. My supporting documents i.e. my OLD PASSPORT arrived a week later, hand delivered via courier and required a signature. I'm thinking it should be the other way around ?
I renewed my passport, the old passport with corner cut I assume came by courier as there was a tracking no. associated with it, I learnt about the tracking no. because I had to enquire where my new one was as after 3 weeks I hadn't received it, they gave me tracking no. and this matches the date when the old passport got delivered but unlike you I still have NOT had my new passport arrive. So I think they sent my old one by courier and the new one well maybe its in the normal post, but its been ages. Rather infuriating to sort, anyone else had same problem?
  • All passports are delivered by courier. Depending on where you live, the courier sends them out by RM special delivery. Documents and old cancelled passports are sent by 2nd class mail unless the courier fee of £3 is paid. Courier doesn't generally ask for a signature.
Phone the Courier on08702773333. And explain that there should be two deliveries to your address.

I'd be a lot more upset if my old passport failed to show up than if my new passport went missing. Therefore, although maybe not realistic I'd rather they took more care delivering my old one.

The courier doesn't use RM Special Delivery as they are delivered by DX a different company.

They do(or at least did) in areas deemed high risk.
