It sounds like the undertaker is trying it on. The NOK has no legal meaning nor responsibility. She should politely but firmly refer them to the executor or the person who ordered the funeral.

Thank you. This was my appreciation of the situation but I wanted to have it confirmed before advising my friend.

I took matters into my own hands about an hour ago. I phoned the funeral director in question and asked him which professional association he belong to. He asked me why I wanted to know so I told him I wanted to complain and explained why.

Firstly he lied again saying he was due the money from the next of kin.

Secondly he gave me the British Institute of Funeral Directors as his professional association. Guess what? They've never heard of him.

Speaking to the gentleman from the BIFD however I was able to confirm everything we've discussed here and I was right at the outset as were all you kind people who chipped in. The NOK is not the person who pays the bill. It is always the person who arranges the contract and signs the agreement however the first duty of the executor of the will is to ensure the funeral is paid for out of the estate if there are enough funds to do so.
