Upgrades on British Airways flights

Total opposite of my sole Gulf Air experience, also flying with a child. They were over-booked, and at check-in they made use wait a long time and then said that we were being bumped, and it was my fault because I had failed to reconfirm. This was the outward sector, from London: I never heard of anyone having to reconfirm the first sector on their ticket.
In the end, after a very long wait, they found seats for us; checked us in in a tearing great hurry and as a result managed to tag our bags to the wrong destination.
It would be nice to think that they have improved since then!0 -

Their CS leaves a lot to be desired. The fact that check in staff at Heathrow were yelling at each other in front of us customers was a surprise! One of the cabin crew snapped at the lad sitting next to me as he didn't sit down. Mind you, their passengers are some of the rudest I've ever travelled with too.
But like I said, £515 return to Bangkok, 3 travellers...we can slum it ;-)Who made hogs and dogs and frogs?

Been upgraded a few times on other airlines - single female business traveller. With Air Canada I was emailed a few days before to tell me I was being upgraded for operational reasons which was a lovely surprise.
Only offer to upgrade with BA was when I was flying off to get married. This had been organised by a friend who is a BA captain. I had to decline as the offer was for two of us and we were travelling with OH's family. Geez - regretted that after about 10 minutes into a transatlantic flight!
Flyertalk does suggest that it's only being related to cabin or flight crew that gives a chance of an upgrade with BA. (My pilot pal says cabin crew have more clout than the pilots)0 -
I used to fly with BA at least 100 times a year and was a gold card holder. Often I was lucky enough to travel club as employer paid for it. When traveling for pleasure in economy I was often upgraded as was my wife who travelled with me.
However I am told that those days are long gone and any upgrades on BA are rare...0
