EDF Energy threatening debt collection on a bill I don't owe?!

Hi All,

I recently moved into a new apartment that has prepayment metres (not something I was aware of when I looked around but has worked out well as its only me here) they had a little bit of credit on them but I went out to the shop and topped them up, now the electricity is with EDF but the gas is with EON.

A month or so later I receive the standard to the occupier letter for gas and electricity, both from EDF. The electricity one says that I'm on a prepayment and that the current reading is that I am in credit by £30 (the amount I topped up) the gas one said that I owe them £25 for gas usage.

I rang EDF to say that my meter isn't with them and is a prepayment and send emails to them with photos of the meter. The rep also advised that she would put a lock on the account she advised to raise this as a complaint so that its monitored and can be referred to the ombudsman if I wasnt happy, so I did.

About two weeks later I got another letter saying I have not been in contact regarding the bill and to ring them asap, so I rang them again and said that a lock should be on the account, the rep advised me that there is actually two accounts linked to this and the lock has been placed on one only so she placed it on the other one.

Then yesterday I receive to letters, one to say that its been 8 weeks since the complaint was raised and details of how to get in touch with the ombudsman and one to say that I need to call them to arrange paying the bill which is now £215... or else there will be debt collecters coming and they will come in to fit a prepayment meter...

I called them again and they said that the lock had expired so they will re-add the lock and that I can just disregard the letter however I was wondering if there is anything further I can do for assurance for two reasons really 1) They've said this three times already and I still got the letter saying I owe them money 2) One of the terms of my lease is to not bring the property into disarray with debt or contracts assigned to the property.

Thanks all!

Suggest phoning 0870 608 1524 - This is Xsoserve who maintain the National Data Base for Gas meters, which lists the address where each meter is located and who the registered supplier is.

If they say it's EDF then your beef is with Eon, but if the registered supplier is Eon, put this in writeing to EDF in a letter headed Complaint

When you move to a new property, you need to reegister with the current energy suppliers at that address.

That applies even if you have a PPM.

If you don't and just use the keys from the previous registered user, all you are doing when you top us is crediting that previous user's account.

I don't understand why a supplier is giving away details of another users account to you ... or as they the 'the occupier'.

So I spoke to xoserve they said that there was no meter registered, the letting agent said they covered it before I moved and gave me the EON gas card but obviously this hasn't been done so I need to register with EON.

Still if I have been using the EON card the supply never came from EDF and I can't get gas from them on a PPM surely?
