I use HG Stove Glass Cleaner. It came from Lakeland, but last time I was in there, they had a different brand.

There's all sorts of dire safety warnings on the bottle, but it cuts through brown tarry grime remarkably well.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

I also use the HG stove glass cleaner, it is very effective, but fairly nasty if you get it on anything but the glass.

    I just cleaned it.

Hob-brite was useless, even soaking it in hob brite for 20 mins twice had no impact.

I then switched to steel wool, this shifted it quite fast. It doesn't seem to have scratched the glass.
  • stovax gel works well, but a quick wipe every day with somedamp newspaper is all you should need.

Reviews on amazon of stovax gel are very good, and it seems a decent price (8 quid for 500ml), will get some.
  • Haven't used the gel so can't really comment but would imagine it would be a lot messier to use than a light spray of something that looks like water. I'd also think that you'd get through a certain amount of gel a lot quicker than you would a sprayed liquid. As I said, I use the Calfire stuff on customers stoves every day and a bottle lasts me for months so will probably last you for much longer!
  • Regular wipe down with newspaper, spit and wood ash.

I've tried wood ash, vinegar and newspaper for cleaning glass. If you're prepared to sit and scrub away at it for hours, you can eventually get some of the grime off. It's toxic corrosive chemicals for me every time now!
