It takes about 5 minutes and costs pennies.

Whatever. You're right; I've just wasted my money because I could have gone to my garage and knocked up something just as good out of odd bits of wood in five minutes. Thanks to the other people for their input and for the benefit of others I'll feed back whether the grippers are any good.0 -

They were 44 quid posted. By the time I drove to the timber yard, bought some bits of wood, got back, cut slots into them, made up some wedges, I'd still not have something as good as something designed to do the job I suspect, bearing in mind I'm doing 11 internal doors. I'm not entirely sure what thats got to do with my DIY skills. Thanks anyway for your input as I'm sure that will be of benefit to someone but the above for me does not equal an easy solution that will cost pennies.0 -

So I'm correct about the ones you bought?0 -
For those who asked, just thought I would update on the magic grippers. Hung four doors now, and all of them have just required planing along the top and bottom edges so obviously with the grippers on the floor and using an electric plane its not really do-able. But, they are really handy for doing the hinges. I'd say they are worth it if you have a lot of doors to hang- if it was four or five I wouldn't bother. But as I've got eleven to do it makes the job a little easier and they work really well. Here's a pic:
