Memory not fitting

I have an old Dell D600 laptop that I want to increase the memory off.
It has 1GB in 1 slot and 256 MB in the other.

It has 2 slots and I was given another 1 GB of memory to replace the 256 MB.

However the 1 GB I was given will not fit because the fitting slot does not line up.

If I was to carefully file the slot on the 1 GB memory would it work or is the 1 GB of memory just not compatible?

The memory that fits is the 256 MB

They put the slots in different places to stop incompatible memory being fitted .
1GB runs at 666Mhz your board does not support that its 333Mhz.

I can put the fine file away then.

Anyone want 1 GB of memory? Going cheap.

If you still want to increase the memory for your PC, this site has a handy scanning tool :

    http://uk.crucial.com/gbr/en

It will scan your system and tell you which memory will fit. You can buy the memory from them, but I did exactly this a few weeks ago for my PC, and found the exact same thing a couple of quid cheaper on Amazon. Bizarrely it was Crucial selling via Amazon, but it cheaper there than on their own site, and with free postage.

    Well, you'll have 1.5GB total instead-still a worthwhile bump for £3.30.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

But it is only getting bumped by 256 MB, hardly worth while.

You can buy a 1GB module, but it will cost more.

    1GB DDR-333 PC2700 Non-ECC CL2.5 200-pin Laptop £14.30 or you can buy one from Hong Kong for around £8.

I don't actually want to spend money on this laptop because it is only going to be used to print to my hp printer that won't work with Windows 8.1.1 64 bit.

It just has Windows XP sp3 installed on it.

I got the 1 GB of memory that doesn't fit from a netbook I put 2 GB memory in.

Just seems a pity to throw it away.

If it's only to be used as a printer hub then why are you even bothering with trying the change the RAM?

And a laptop running 24/7 as a printer hub will not be very cost-effective. What HP printer model is it? And what model is your network router?
