Spices for Curries

Oh I like the pestle and mortar idea!
I don't know much about curries at all but was thinking of getting a recipe book to go with the spices. Maybe The Curry Secret book.
I am going to write a little list of spices and have a wander about to check out the prices.
Thank you!0 -
Easiest book I've got is the Hairy Bikers one0

Take away secret is another good one to try. All sort of ideas in that.

All I use is chilli powder (Extra hot. What's the point of medium or mild chilli powder? If you want a medium or mild curry, just use less!), garam masala, turmeric and, sometimes, cumin. If you fold it in half, will an Audi A4 fit in a Citroen C5?

It's not homemade by you, but personalised to their taste - some friends were raving about a curry spice subscription they signed up to, you sign up and get posted the ingredients (and recipe) for making a curry (with sides) on a monthly basis. They said it was much tastier than the supermarket spices they normally use. Not sure what company they went with, but it was something like this - http://www.thespicery.com/pages/spiceboxes/spiceboxes.html0

Hi again!... how's the hamper coming along?
There's some great ideas on here... Steve059 I'm guessing you like your curry hot?! Me too... I have a fab recipe for a garlic chilli curry... it makes your eyes water
Not sure if you have a 1stop near you Old-fashioned-girl ? but my local one does fresh organic garlic for around a £1 for a pack of 3 bulbs. Much better than the supermarket ones I've used & tends to keep longer.
If you want more ideas on hampers there is a brilliant thread in Christmas & yuletide festivities

A few people have mentioned fenugreek. I have looked for this in Tesco and Sainsbury's, but cannot find it in either of those two stores. I have been looking in the spices shelves. Am I looking in the wrong shelves or is it a spice that you have to get in a specialist shop?0
