Have you checked mysupermarket. I've done a search and it has Schwartz ground fenugreek for my stores.
If not, have a look in the world food aisles of your local stores or in ethnic shops if you have any.0 -
I also use cardamom pods and cloves in many of my curries.0

Thanks for that reply regarding the availability of fenugreek.
The Schwartz selection in Tescos and Sainsbury's did not have fenugreek in it when I last looked, but I will look again the next time I visit those stores.0 -
I was in Tescos last night and I found fenugreek among the Schwartz spices. I have looked several times in Tescos before for this spice, but could not find it. It was in the orange top bottles in the curry section. It could be a new into stock or maybe I just have not looked hard enough for it the other times. Its annoying that do not know which.0

Aside from the spices - they will need an appropriate pan to make it all in. Can be done in just your regular pots and pans, but a really good large heavy bottomed high sided frying pan with lid will be much more appropriate.
Also, once you start cooking curries regularly, you'll need somewhere to store all the spices. There are a million different designs of spice rack off ebay for all sizes of kitchens.0 -
I've been using this curry recipe book for years. It's absolutely wonderful.

How about adding a packet of chilli seeds and coriander so the recipient can 'grow their own'? They are not difficult for kitchen window sills and any excess can be dried/frozen and much cheaper than the piddling expensive stuff at the SM's. I have acess to quite a few Indian shops nearby, which keep me supplied with all manner of spices and chuneys.
They do a packet of Methi dried fenugreek leaves for about £1.20 and it is huge compared to the little Schwarz jars. We use it in most curries especially bombay potato - it transforms them.0 -
It's not homemade by you, but personalised to their taste - some friends were raving about a curry spice subscription they signed up to, you sign up and get posted the ingredients (and recipe) for making a curry (with sides) on a monthly basis. They said it was much tastier than the supermarket spices they normally use. Not sure what company they went with, but it was something like this - http://www.thespicery.com/pages/spiceboxes/spiceboxes.html
The Spicery used to be just along the road from where I worked in Bath, don't just look at the monthly subscription but also all the weird and wonderful they have on their site from teaspoon trial size to larger packets. I was lucky enough to pop in their unit to collect (even though it was free P&P), the smell was heavenly. Am still working through my goulash spices (in fact having goulash again this weekend). Yes, I would recommend them.0
