Our retriever has a tin of sardines every other day and that's helped his mobility no end. We're trying to get his weight down to Help as well which is proving difficult..

Still don't see the point if the insurance company is paying. The excess is the same wherever I get Lucy's Metacam from. I have already gone over the excess with this one consultation and the Metacam. The annual insurance renewal date has only just passed about a week ago so this is the first claim.

I may as well just get it directly from the vet despite the ridiculous price as I'm only now going to be paying 20% of the cost myself.

Check if your insurance cover is per year or per condition - if per condition you would b shooting yourself in the foot.
  • Had to take my dog to the emergency vet last week, walked out and £220 less in my bank! Was told on the phone it was £140 just to walk in the door.

Emergency/out of hours do cost a lot - that is why anyone taking on a dog should get insurance

I can't remember how much I've paid out for one of my rabbits in the last year alone but I worked out recently the insurance has paid out more than £1400 in that period so the vet bills have cost more when you take into account the excess, checkups and other things they don't cover (vaccinations etc). I'm quite relieved these days when I get a bill for £95 :rotfl:

However all that being said that although I will probably need to "replace" one when one dies, eventually we will stop having pets altogether because the rising cost of vet bills just means they are not affordable for the vast majority of people if they develop a long term illness. Without insurance I'd definitely be up !!!! creek without a paddle.

I have always had full insurance for all my dogs. I think it's vital unless you fulfil the PDSA criteria, which I don't.

It still costs a lot though when the dog is older, not only for the premiums but for the excess, which is £70 plus 20% of the remainder of the vet fees.

Lucy's insurance covers vet fees up to £7000 per year. We pay a slightly higher premium but worth it

My dog was not insured and a tumour op last year ended up costing me £1000 ish. Had it been one lump sum, I may of not bothered for an older dog, but it was £350, then the wound got infected so it was more surgery and so on.... I am sure the vet bungled the surgery, but how do you know? I know that the medication was about 60% less online, but the vet charges £18.50 per prescription.
They certainly have you by the neutered organs

We are insured with high excess on the older dog
I just wouldn't be able to put my hands on the kind of cash needed for recent operation
I could use pdsa as I qualify, or blue cross but neither are near and they don't actually cover any referrals so I struggle on with insurance fees

It is a lot but when you factor in the training, the facilities, the equipment it's probably value for money.

I no longer have insurance as there were so many exclusions for pre-existing conditions that it seemed like nothing was covered. I was paying out over £1000 per year plus paying same again in insurance premiums. Now save the money instead. He's 12 now and on Metacam but apart from that quite healthy.
