Courier for furniture

Hi

I am soon to be venturing into selling furniture online via eBay to begin with and then via my own website.

Does anyone know of a good courier to use for furniture? These items will range from chairs to bookcases to wardrobes, pretty much anything and everything!

I have only ever sold small things online and am a bit lost when it comes to transporting larger items safely and affordably!

Thanks :)

It depends on how they are packed (or not). Parcelforce do a large/outsize parcel service which would cover most flat packed and other items. I think many of the big couriers have that option now.
If it isn't pack you'll need more specialist couriers.
Just to add that "safely and affordably" aren't words that go together well in the world of couriers. I'd imagine Yodel would be one of the cheapest couriers for furniture, I wouldn't let them deliver doll's furniture for me.

The best way to find out would be to have a look at furniture sellers on Ebay and see which couriers they use.

Thanks for the replies. It's not flat packed furniture unfortunately. It will be solid pieces which have been restored.

I'll have to do some more research before putting my first items up. I know I want to reach a bigger audience than just local people so I'll have to contact a few companies :)

You could try pallet rates for some stuff, price is somewhere between £50 and £80 per pallet.

Furniture and ebay are a right buyer, right place and right time.

I have had some super bargains, I went to pickup a coffee table and the guy had a solid wooden dining room dresser, It looked in great condition. Must have cost a fortune. He sold it for the grand sum of 99p.

Probably a few hundred £ at an antique shop.

Hi Jude, it depends on how many parcels you send per day. Maybe to start with, Tuffnells are good for large bulky items (UK to UK). When your business starts to flourish, a broker such as Parcelhub can offer discounted rates on multiple items.

From the Ebay point of view I think you'll have problem as the cost is going to depend on how far it is sent. Until someone bids you will have no idea where they are in the country. Cheap parcel delivery companies will only take boxed items and exclude large things the size of a wardrobe or chest of drawers.

    Jude, be upfront on ebay.
Collection (with unpackaged dimensions) or local bloke with van rate - and if your customer wants it cheaper they can sort it.

Try Silversprint - they offer a wrapping service and have a 'slow' economy service where each week they set off on routes around the country doing multiple picks and drops - and they do take large furniture.

I think you also need to give consideration to the fact that some couriers operate a " kerb to kerb" delivery. If the person lives in a block of flats, the courier won't neccesarily take it to their door.
I find a largish piece of furniture costs about £ 70 to send, so it has to be viable for the buyer to add that cost onto the item.
