Branch code

I have made a few transfers from my UK bank to my Australian broker over the years.

Now for the first time I want to transfer some funds from my Austrlian broker to my UK bank account.

The online form is asking me for my name, account number, BIC/SWIFT code, country transferring to and the IBAN, all of which I have.

It is also asking for the Branch Code, I am not sure what this is.
I emailed my broker who typed this,
"You should ask your bank to confirm because we will just use the information you provide to send the wire, so info accuracy would have to come from your bank."

I am out of the country so unable to ask my bank, anyone here know what it is?
I do not think it is the sort code as that is contained within the IBAN.

I'm sure it is the sort code.

Ahhhh but the Sort Code (or equivalent) isn't included in all countries IBAN's (main reason we still quote the BIC, UK IBAN's technically don't need it, but other countries format do)
  • The IBAN number relating to a UK bank contains the bank sort code. Ensure that you have an IBAN starting with GB. The last 8 digits of the IBAN is your bank account number and the preceeding 6 digits is the bank sort code.

Suggest you transfer a small amount to test everthing works okay.

An email to your bank can also provide it very easily.

    Thank-you for the replies.

From using Google it does appear that the Branch code is the Sort code.

Yes my IBAN starts with GB then the 6 digit sort code and then the 8 digit account number.

Good .. you should have a little bit more data.
After GB .. BARC for Barclays and similar abbreviations for other banks.
Then most important is the following 2 digit code. This is a check sum which controls the intergrity of the full IBAN number.

    Good luck.

The Australian equivalent of a sort code is their bank code (BSB)

Both the UK sort code and SWIFT BIC are generally branch specific.
This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com

The funds have arrived, actually the next day which was a surprise so I guess the information I provided was correct.

I transferred 4000 GBP, my broker says they charge 20 AUD and my bank says they charge 7GBP for receiving international payments of over 100 GBP.

On my statement it just shows the amount deposited as 3970 but does not show the charges so am not sure who charged what.

I think it should have been about 18GBP in total not 30GBP.

I am out of the UK for a while, does anyone have a contact e-mail address for Halifax please?

Other banks involved in the transaction may deduct their fee from the amount being sent.

    "Other" = "intermediary".

Were it ££ or AUD that you sent from Australia?

they don't offer email for specific customer enquiries (only general enquiries), your best bet from abroad would appear to be Twitter
