I guess you have to argue wether "are fit for the purposes for which goods of the same type are normally used" a dryer should last more than 13 months.

    Not really.

The average industry failure rate is about 8% in the first year which rises on cheaper goods up to a whopping 47% on some Asian products. So you've normally almost got at least a one in ten chance of a failure within the one year warranty and that tails off until about three years then starts to rise again.

The lowest failure rates are on German and Swedish made appliances which drop down to under 3% in some cases, but still they can and do fail on occasion.

It is actually far more unreasonable to expect any machine to go on for any set period without a failure as opposed to expecting them not to.

It constantly astonishes me that people do expect this on browngoods (TV's Hi-Fi's etc.) and whitegoods (fridges, washers etc.) and yet don't expect it on other things, like cars for example. I mean, how many people get a new car because something broke after a month let alone a year? Yet most people seem happy to demand a new appliance if it breaks within a year, it's crazy. The same consumer rights and law applies, they are all electro-mechanical devices so why should they be treated any differently?

The simple fact of it is that every machine will break down, it is only the "when" that is in question, not "if".

Off topic but I wonder if it comes under the 'sale of goods act 1979'
I had the exterior woodwork on the house painted with Sandtex paint last September. By January it was peeling off. Letters to Sandtex have been sent but their reply is 'its a failure of the primer coat and not their problem'. Any advice please? Supposedly theres a 5 year guarantee on their paint!

I got a local guy around to have a look at my dryer. He tried the dryer and it worked first time. He thinks that some water/moisture from the condenser must have got somewhere it shouldn't have within the mechanism. Cost including call out charge = £0. Glad I didn't call in Hotpoint or that pearl of wisdom would have cost me £90. This guy I had round is a Bolton based engineer if anyone wants his number P.M me!

  • You really shouldnt be putting your hand in your pocket.

Print a copy of the Sale of Goods act off the web and take it to the store you bought it from. it is their responsibility, rather than the manufacturers to get this sorted, since it's them that sold it to you.

SOG act means that good should last a reasonable period. 13months clearly is not reasonable.

My mum's oven blew up after 15months on a 12 month warranty. B&Q said it wasnt their problem until we went along armed with SOG information, at which point an engineer was dispatched in 24 hours, free of charge.

    Good luck.

Depending on the Sales staff, I had a wonderful salesman, whom (discreetly), allowed me to get a new warrenty on my Fridge/Freezer after the original warrenty had expired and predictably, it had broken down. The salesman still got his deal out of it as they are awarded bonuses for each warrenty they sell (regardless of purchase).

As soon as I bought the new warrenty, I phoned for a repair, the technician came round and immediatly condemned the appliance, as a result, I got a brand spanking new one as a replacement, still with the existing warrenty.

    Thank you Hotpoint

Hi, I'm having a problem with my Hotpoint CTD00P dryer, the warranty ran out on 30/8/07, would you believe?

After reading through I have seen a few knowledgeable people and wondered if anyone could diagnose what is wrong, it just won't get hot, I have emptied the water trough, cleaned the filter and cleaned the condensor, I think the heating element must have gone, any other ideas?

I too have contacted Hotpoint and am waiting for a reply.

    Thanks in advance.

Absolutely gutted about Paul Walker - RIP xx

  • They have a tiny safety cut out switch on the back, you need to pull it out, find the tiny button and push it - may needto push something into it. It shoud be in your instructions. My old white knight machine used to go off at least once a week, but they all have them. Good as new in no time - don't call an engineer he'll be rubbing his hands together!!
  • Ifeel for you. I have an Ariston washer dryer (part of Indesit like Hotpoint) & it too went wrong a week after it was a year old. I bought it from Currys with a 5 year guarantee - something I don't usually buy. Just as well I did because has gone wrong 3 more times this year. It's a differnent problem every time. It is broken at the momemt with a loose heater bracket. They came out wednesday of last week but don't carry the part on their vans s o hopefully coming to mend it tomorrow. In July it reqd a new heater for the dryer. The engineer who came out last week told my partner that these macnes are c... with no quality control & that the company don't care. They will keep repairing while guarantee valid but as my machine is breaking down at the rate of every 6-8 weeks I'll be driven mad with it doing that until the end of 2010.

    Sounds like fraud to me.

Best to quote the sales of good act instead. I recently got a 14 month old 25 quid dvd player fixed for free this way
