What is the easiest way of finding electricity suppliers who don't insist on direct debits and fixed terms?

Comparison sites such as UKpower or Uswitch. You select the payment method from a drop down menu and pick the type of contract you want...... the information is there ......you just have to read the terms of each tariff listed.

Sadly, by limiting your options to variable tariffs and non-DD payments, you could end up paying more for your energy than you need to.

No minimum term (if that's what you mean by 'fixed term') generally means Standard tariff-the most expensive. Why?

Yes, as already suggested, a comparison site is the best way

I am with Ebico, no standing charge, no penalties for quarterly bills, and simple to understand tariffs. Had my bills yesterday, electricity £21.04. Admittedly this covers the summer period, I expect the next one to be a bit more as the shorter days come in. Gas was even lower, £6.04, but that is for cooking only, and heating water for baths. I won't put the heating on unless I am very cold.

This may not be for everyone, but it suits me as I am an extremely low user. You need to check the price per kilowatt hour. Perhaps try a comparison site as suggested.

If method rather than price alone is most important for you Ebico will charge you the same rate regardless of how you pay.

Standard tariffs are the base line

Short term fixes are currently always cheaper as the market is falling
Long term fixes and green tariffs are generally more expensive than standard.

No standing charge but you pay for it with a much higher per Kwh charge .
In some cases this may work out cheaper especially with zero or low summer use . Generally though its a more expensive tariff .

    Why is it a dilemma?
  • I have one direct debit and that pays off my credit card in full every month and every bill I can gets paid with the credit card.Yes,it may seem to cost more but does it?You only have to read the posts on this forum where people are overcharged/not charged/not repaid when in credit. My meter gets read either by me (on line prompt) or the meter reader calls,my bill comes in,I pay it.I get cash back for using the credit card which offsets the extra I get charged when I use it for certain bills.
The dilemma is that there seem to be very few companies who do quarterly bills,I had tried a few comparison sites before I asked my question,I'll see what Ebico are like - thank you IIona
