Air Canada delay

my daughter and I were delayed several uncomfortable nocturnal hours (>6) at LHR awaiting a flight to Toronto with Air Canada for stop over prior to flying the next day onward to Cancun.
Because we reached our final destination on time, they refused to pay up compensation, plus the hotel booking I had made in Toronto for the night was neither used nor compensated either.
Any thoughts?
